DENVER -- The Los Angeles Kings were dominant on the road in last year's playoffs. Two games into a new season, the defending Stanley Cup champions can't win anywhere. Gabriel Landeskog and David Jones scored 1:35 apart to start the third period, Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves and the Colorado Avalanche beat Los Angeles 3-1 Tuesday night at Pepsi Center. P.A. Parenteau also scored a third-period goal for the Avalanche (1-1) in their home opener. "Stanley Cup champions coming in, it wasn't hard to get up for this one," said Landeskog, the team's new captain. "Getting that first one for me and the first one for P.A. and Jones, it's going to take a little monkey off our back." Jonathan Quick also made 28 saves and Kyle Clifford scored in the first period for Los Angeles, which has lost two straight to start the season. The Kings had an historic run to the title last year, winning their first 10 road postseason games and finishing 10-1 ...

Penner benched for Oilers game

EDMONTON, Canada -- The first casualty of the Kings slow start turned out to be left wing Dustin Penner, a healthy scratch for Thursday nights game against the Oilers. Kyle Clifford will be taking Penners spot on the second line with Jeff Carter and center Mike Richards, at least at the start. Penner thought this move might be serving as a wakeup call for the Stanley Cup champion...

Kings' Mitchell puts availability on hold

EDMONTON, Canada -- Kings Coach Darryl Sutter, the minister of bluntness, was at it again on this textbook winter day in Alberta. With the Kings trying to avoid a 0-3 start, attention turned to the future availability of veteran defenseman Willie Mitchell. Mitchell had knee surgery during the lockout and is moving along. Not fast enough, apparently. "You know what, he'...

Matt Duchene Took a Puck to the Chin and Got 19 Stitches (Video)

Meet Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche.  Last night the Avalanche beat the LA Kings 3-1, and Duchene was on the bad end of a hockey puck to the chin.  Drew Doughty of the Kings wound up for a slap shot in the third period and smacked it right into Duchene's chin.  You can see what the result was above.  19 stitches and an ugly looking grill.  The crazy part is that...

Colorado Avalanche will miss Steve Downie

The Colorado Avalanche had high hopes for Steve Downie this season. He added grit, energy and a bit of skill after arriving from Tampa Bay last season. He scored 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) and posted a plus-9 rating in his first 20 games with his new team. Back in 2009-10, he scored 22 goals and added 24 assists in 79 games for the Lightning. He also earned, ahem, 208 penalty...

Kings-Oilers Preview

The Los Angeles Kings have yet to find their offense in getting off to a slow start after hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. Having top center Anze Kopitar getting healthier by the day could help them break out of that funk sooner than later. Kopitar and the low-scoring Kings look to avoid losing their first three games for the first time since the...

Matthew Barry: P.K. Subban to the Kings?

Mitchell is getting older - Scuderi is in the final year of his contract - Subban and Doughty for the next 5-6 years would be just brutal to the opponents of the Western Conference. If the Habs ARE willing to deal P.K., a Western Conference team would make sense. Is P.K. a Dean Lombardi "right fit?" What would it cost Lombardi? They don't need Bernier and its...

Aaron Musick: Avalanche ins and outs

As the Avalanche get ready to face off with the Columbus Blue Jackets, they will do so without the services of one player and the possible return of another. Yesterday news came out that the Avs have lost third line right wing Steve Downie for the season with an ACL tear. Downie will have surgery and will miss the rest of the season. Brad Malone has been called up from the Lake Erie Monsters...
