After the Sharks came out of nowhere to sign Antti Niemi, goaltender Thomas Greiss was left without a job. They signed Antero Niittymaki very early in the free agency period, and Alex Stalock was penned in to be the starter in Worcester. Greiss cleared waivers and was loaned to Brynas of the Swedish Elite League. With his NHL contract up at the end of the 2010-11 season, it looked like Greiss’ career in teal was over.
But Greiss gave the Sharks another chance. He signed a two-year contract to remain with team teal. The first year of the deal is a two-way contract where he’ll make $105K in the AHL and $550K in the NHL. The second year of the contract is a one-way deal worth $625K. His NHL cap hit is $587.5K.
Greiss struggled behind a bad Brynas team, posting a 2.92 GAA and a .901 save percentage in 32 games (I couldn’t find his record anywhere). Part of his bad numbers could be attributed to playing behind a bad team. He also was not used to playing on the bigger ic...
