On this day, 14 years ago, the Calgary Flames introduced five new members of the team to the media: Mike Cammalleri, Todd Bertuzzi, Curtis Glencross, Rene Bourque, and enforcer Andre Roy. In the summer of 2008, General Manager, Darryl Sutter made some major off-season moves to change the culture and identity of the Calgary Flames.
These additions were joining an existing core group of players in Jarome Iginla, Miikka Kiprusoff, Dion Phaneuf, and Robyn Regehr.
Lets take a trip down memory lane and look at how each player was acquired and how they worked out in Calgary.
Mike Cammalleri
The Flames acquired skilled forward, Mike Cammalleri from the Los Angeles Kings in a three team draft day deal. Darryl Sutter traded Calgary’s first round pick (17th overall) to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Cammalleri. The Kings sent Calgary’s 17th overall pick and the 28th overall pick to Anaheim to move up to 13th overall in the 2008 NHL Draft, where they would select defenseman Colton Teubert.
Cammalleri went on to have an outstanding 2008-09 season scoring 39 goals and 82 points in 81 games. Jarome Iginla led the Calgary Flames in goals in every season but one from 2000-01 to 2011-12. The one year he was beat was the 2008-09 season when Cammalleri scored 39 goals, four more than Iginla’s 35.
You would have thought it would be a matter of when, not if the Flames would sign Cammalleri to a long-term extension after the 2008-09 season. But Darryl Sutter had different ideas. Sutter decided to spend his free agent money on defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, not Cammalleri, and the winger left town for Montreal.
Calgary re-acquired the stud left winger once again in 2012 in a mid-game trade with the Canadians. In total Cammalleri spent parts of four seasons with the Flames playing in 216 games, scoring 89 goals and 89 assists.

Curtis Glencross
The Calgary Flames raided the roster of the Edmonton Oilers in the summer of 2008 signing Curtis Glencross to a three year, $3.2 million dollar free agent contract. Glencross was a sneaky good signing by Sutter as Glencross scored at a 14 goal pace the year prior in Edmonton.
The Kindersley, Saskatchewan product was a perfect fit with the Flames throughout his seven year tenure with the club. He was the ultimate hockey player as he could score, hit, and fight: the perfect player for teams coached by the likes of Mike Keenan, Brent Sutter and Bob Hartley.
Glencross will be most know for his patented snap shot he would use on breakaways and when open in the slot. Glencross spent seven seasons in Calgary scoring 114 goals and 128 assists in 418 games.
Rene Bourque
On July 1, 2008, GM Darryl Sutter traded a second round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for the pride of Lac La Biche, Alberta, Rene Bourque. Sutter signed Bourque to a two year contract on the same day.
Bourque was known for being a skilled, power forward who could score goals and play a heavy game when he wanted to. Bourque finished second in goals on the Flames in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons scoring 27 in each. Bourque showed flashes of being an elite power forward, but would then go on long stretches of ineffective play.
Overall, Bourque was a solid member of the Flames but always left Flames fans wanting a little more as Rene had the talent to be a star player. He played parts of four seasons with the Flames scoring 88 goals and 76 assists in 249 games.
Todd Bertuzzi
It is fair to say that a lot of Flames fans were in shock when they found out that long time rival, Todd Bertuzzi signed a one-year contract worth $1.95 million with the Calgary Flames. Bertuzzi was not a fan favorite in Calgary during his eight seasons in Vancouver where he and his West Coast Express line mates Markus Naslund and Brendan Morrison put up some big numbers against the Flames.
Bertuzzi showed some flashes of offensive brilliance during his short time with the Flames including some gorgeous shootout goals. He was a great secondary scoring option behind Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow, and Mike Cammalleri.
Bertuzzi played in 66 games scoring 15 goals and 29 assists while racking up 74 penalty minutes.

Andre Roy
The Flames acquired Andre Roy via free agency on July 21, 2008. Calgary was looking for a replacement for Eric Godard as the main enforcer in their lineup.
Roy joined a tough Flames team that included Brandon Prust, Dion Phaneuf, Jim Vandermeer, Eric Nystrom, Cory Sarich and Jarome Iginla.
The 2008-09 season with the Flames was Roy’s last in the NHL. He scored three goals and put up 83 penalty minutes in 44 games.
