In the hierarchy of the NHL's starting goaltenders, where does Cam Ward fit? Well, for those who live by the theory of "what have you done for me lately," probably not very high. But to those who so heavily base their opinion on recent results rather than contributing factors, I pose a query. Can you name more than a few players (other than Ward) from last year's Carolina Hurricanes? It's okay, I'll wait. . .. ... Alright, time's up. If you got more than Ward, Eric Staal, Jeff Skinner and Justin Faulk, congratulations. After taking your blindfold off, and a quick Google search, it doesn't take a genius to realize that Carolina was in shambles in 2011-12. But seven months later, general manager Jim Rutherford may have pieced together a well-balanced roster that might make you reconsider your thoughts on them and their franchise goaltender. Rutherford's signing of Alexander Semin, the (don't say enigmatic, don't s...

Hurricanes have pieces to make run

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford liked the core of his team enough at the end of last season that instead of moving players from a club that didnt reach the postseason, he systematically added parts. Gone, at least for now, is the perception that this is a penny-pinching organization trying to massage a playoff spot out of a group that too often...

Hurricanes Roster Set

Well, after a very long wait the big day is finally here and the NHL season is ready to get underway starting at 3 p.m. Saturday. Today was the last day of training camp and teams had until 5 p.m. to finalize their rosters for opening night. We've spent the last week or so going over which players might make the roster and the final 23 are now set in stone. After the jump...

Better late than never. The 2012-13 (now truncated to just 2013) Canes season starts tonight. Game 1 Scoring Chances: Hurricanes vs. Panthers

It's a new year, which means that it's time to restart our regular breakdowns of the Hurricanes scoring chance numbers. Wish that I could begin this on a happier note but the Hurricanes didn't get off to the start they planned last night, losing their season opener 5-1 to the Florida Panthers. I know that breaking down the gruesome details of a blowout loss is never fun...

A night that began with excitement and tension ended in disappointment and frustration as the Carolina Hurricanes dropped their first game of the season in a blowout loss to the division rival Florida Panthers. With the schedule being so heavy on divisional play, getting wins or at least strong performances against teams like Florida, Washington, Tampa Bay and Winnipeg is going to...

Goalies brace for challenge of compressed season

One good goalie probably won't be enough to get NHL teams through this season's lockout-compressed schedule. With 48 games crammed into roughly three months recovery time will be at a premium. Goaltenders used to playing virtually every minute of every game will have to pace themselves - maybe even take some extra nights off - to stay fresh. ''It's going to...
