The Colorado Avalanche hockey operation a mess. Every move general manager Greg Sherman makes seems to turn to muck.Last season he made a big play for former first overall pick Erik Johnson, getting the puck-rushing defenseman, center Jay McClement and a first-round pick from the Blues for power forward Chris Stewart, defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk and a second-round pick.Johnson has no goals, nine assists and a minus-12 rating in 21 games for Colorado this season. His change of scenery did not inspire him to reach his full potential. The Blues wouldn’t trade Shattenkirk (two goals, 10 assists, plus-8 this season) even up to get him back. Last season Sherman traded goaltender Craig Anderson to Ottawa for Brian Elliott, then let Elliott walk as a free agent. Elliott is 7-1 with a 1.43 ERA in St. Louis and Anderson is 9-6-1 for the surprising Senators.Sherman spent a first- and second-round pick to get goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who was threatening to return to Russia after falling out...

The Avalanche was put through its first "bag skate" of the season Mopnday. Avs coach Joe Sacco put his players through about an eight-minute bag skate — a euphemism for a punishing one.
