“Last Olympics, Ireland won a gold medal. Not even a number. A letter of the alphabet amount.”—Tommy Tiernan, Irish Comedian This joke hits a bit too close to home right now, as the Avs under Joe Sacco have only managed back-to-back regulation wins once in the last 74 games. He has also led the team to new records in losing and winless streaks. Unlike Paul Maurice and Bruce Boudreau, Joe Sacco still has a job. I’m not a big fan of firing coaches myself, and with the Avs’ track record of hiring coaches I have my doubts as to how a change would impact the team - but Joe Sacco needs to go. Continue reading "Time to sack Sacco?"

Next Coach On The Move?

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC, Colorado is another interesting one, considering the Avalanche are tremendous at keeping secrets. Other teams, however, believe changes are possible, but how high will they go? Prospective coaches may be nervous about going there now if a full-on regime change is to occur this summer. As one executive put it to me: who is (or will be) calling the shots...

Matt Duchene on left wing, but Avalanche coach Joe Sacco shakes up lines

Avalanche coach Joe Sacco will again shake up his lines in search of more offense in tonight's game against the New Jersey Devils at the Pepsi Center.

With Johnson back soon, who on D will sit for Avalanche? With Stefan Elliott having another outstanding game tonight, along with the rest of his team, the big question I have is: who’s gonna sit when Erik Johnson comes back? Let’s start with the premise that Elliott can NOT be one of the current top six defensemen who sit with EJ comes back, possibly Friday night against his old team, St. Louis. Unless the Avs’...

Elliott gets assist in second game for Avs

Rookie defenseman Stefan Elliott put another point on his stat sheet, assisting on the Avalanche's only goal in Monday's 3-1 loss to Dallas.

Mueller, EJ skate this morning, both to remain on IR

Just 12 skaters and two goalies participated in this morning’s skate at the Pepsi Center in preparation for tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils. Among the participants were left wing Peter Mueller and defenseman Erik Johnson. Both are on injured reserve and Avs coach Joe Sacco said neither will be activated today. Mueller and EJ were unavailable for comment. Those not...

Avalanche scores with new line

Fifteen years separate 35-year-old winger Milan Hejduk from center Ryan O'Reilly, but the Avalanche forwards thought and played like twins Wednesday night.

Tuesday Avalanche notebook

Not too exciting a day down at Avalanche headquarters. Avs went through a regular practice, and had a meeting afterward. But it wasn’t a team meeting to talk about their latest problems on the ice, it was an NHL security meeting. Basically, the Avs watched a video concerning the realities of today’s smartphone age. The message can be boiled down to: watch what you text, watch...

Avs to go with same lineup against Stars The lineup that beat Edmonton Saturday night will be the same one for tonight’s matchup with the Stars. Though he won’t play tonight, Erik Johnson did skate today, for a second straight day. I don’t have a firm return date, but it probably won’t be too long. Dallas will be without top goaltender Kari Lehtonen, who suffered a knee injury and will be out...

Avalanche score early and often, beat Devils 6-1

Ryan O'Reilly had a goal and two assists, Semyon Varlamov made 18 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the New Jersey Devils 6-1 on Wednesday night.

Dallas Stars (13-9-1) at Colorado Avalanche (10-12-1), 9 p.m. (ET)

The Colorado Avalanche will try to post consecutive wins for the first time in over a month when they host the struggling Dallas Stars tonight at Pepsi Center.

Thursday NHL potpourri

Getty Images Getty Images I just love saying the word potpourri. How many of you just called it “Pot Porry” right now? Me too, for a long time, longer than I’d care to admit. Well, a bit of news around the league last few days, all involving coaches getting fired and at least one, Bruce “Gabby” Boudreau already re-hired in Anaheim. In case you missed it, late last night...
