Just as soon as the NHL season began for players across the league, it potentially ended for Washington Capitals Defenseman, Tom Poti. Poti, who missed 61 games last season due to a recurring groin injury, failed his preseason physical examination on Friday morning. This is most likely good news for the Capitals front office because they will be able to place Poti on the long-term injured reserve list, freeing up $2.875 million in the Capitals cap space. This is good for the team, as they are currently sitting just above the salary cap. However, this is a disappointing outcome for Poti. He was expecting to be fully healed and ready to go at the beginning of training camp. It’s hard to tell if or when Poti would return to playing condition, but most likely by mid season we will see him on the blue line with Mike Green, Jeff Schultz, or even Dennis Wideman.
