Patrick Kaleta's hit from behind on Brad Richards is sure to draw some attention from NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan this week but, as the New York Rangers forward lay still on the ice, Richards' team and head coach took notice and responded.
After Richards was crashed into the boards by the Buffalo Sabres forward with his stick at 3:28 of the third period, the Rangers scored twice on the ensuing five-minute power play before winning the game 3-2 in a shootout.
Rangers coach John Tortorella was aware that Kaleta's cheap shot changed the complexion of the game but had some stern words for Kaleta after the culprit was tossed.
"I'm glad we made them pay," Tortorella told reporters after the game. "It's disgusting. It's a lack of respect. Each team wants to beat the other team, but you have to respect what's going on, on the ice."
Richards went into the boards head first and was on the ice for a few minutes holding what appeared to be his left shoulder. He got up on his own power and slowly skated off the ice before returning to help his team score on the power play.
Torts had some more choice words for Kaleta — who was suspended for four games last season for head-butting the Flyers' Jakub Voracek — and his reputation.
"It's probably one of the most dangerous hits I've seen," said the irate coach. " Same guys...it's ridiculous," he said, pausing and trying to compose himself. "That's what I thought."
Richards — who claims he was only catching his breath while he lay on the ice — jumped all over Kaleta's nasty cheap shot after the win.
"That's not a hit ever that was in the game, I don't think," Richards said. "It's a little different than a head shot. That's just stupidity. If we're all going to look at each other's numbers and ram each other from behind head first into the boards, it's going to be a tough game to play. It's not hockey, I don't know what game he plays. He doesn't play hockey to begin with. It's the same guy all the time.
"At least we got something out of it," Richards said of the Rangers' rally.

Richards Doesn't Practice as Kaleta Feels Like Garbage for Hurting Team Not Richards
The Rangers website reports that Brad Richards did not practice the day after he was violently boarded by Patrick Kaleta.
However, in a piece of good news John Tortorella said that Richards will be fine and no one has been recalled from the Whale making it likely that Richards will play against the Islanders tomorrow night at MSG.
Arron Asham (back spasms) was also absent...
Sabres’ Patrick Kaleta’s dirty hit on Rangers’ Brad Richards from behind (VIDEO)
The Buffalo Sabres are having one of the more disappointing shortened seasons among their NHL counterparts. All-world goalie Ryan Miller hasn’t gotten much help in front of him. Giving up the third most goals in the NHL doesn’t go too far in trying to win hockey games. Nor do stupid plays like this one from Patrick Kaleta Sunday.
Kaleta, a sixth-year forward for the Sabres...

Patrick Kaleta Checks Brad Richards Into the Boards From Behind and It's Ugly (Video)
Buffalo Sabres meat head Patrick Kaleta has been one of the most hated players around the NHL for a while now. He showed us why yesterday when he checked New York's Brad Richards from behind, and sent him headfirst into the
boards. Not a pretty looking site when your neck is on the line.

Patrick Kaleta Suspended Five Games for Hit From Behind on Brad Richards (Video)

Patrick Kaleta suspended 5 games, but is it enough?
On Sunday night during a game with the New York Rangers, Patrick Kaleta of the Buffalo Sabres boarded Brad Richards and caused the Rangers forward to writhe in agony on the ice for several moments. Patrick Kaleta gets five games for this cheap shot on Brad Richards
I could have predicted that Brendan Shanahan and the Department of Player Safety was going to throw the book at Patrick Kaleta for this dirty hit on the Rangers forward Brad Richards. If I am not mistaken, this is the longest suspension in the NHL so far this year. Kaleta has now been suspended three times for a total of 11 games by the NHL, he's starting to develop quite a name...

Nash, Callahan Propel Rangers To Win Over Flyers At MSG
The New York Rangers concluded their four game home stand against the divisional rival Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. They’d be doing so without Brad Richards, still feeling some soreness after the vicious hit from behind by the Sabres Patrick Kaleta on Tuesday, which earned Kaleta a five game suspension. Michael Haley was called up from the [...]
Rangers recall Micheal Haley
The Rangers have recalled forward Micheal Haley for tonight’s game against the Flyers. This is for one of two reasons: 1) Brad Richards cannot go tonight, or 2) Haley will replace Stu Bickel in the lineup to provide better skating without losing that edge.
In 56 games in the AHL with Connecticut this year, Haley has a line of 9-12-21 with 158 PIMs.

GARTH: Reputation
Sabres winger Patrick Kaleta has a reputation around the NHL of being a robust competitor. He hits hard. He plays hard. Thats why his opponents can't stand playing against him. They'd much rather be his line mate than his crash test dummy.
On Sunday night, inside Madison Square garden, before the eyes of the hockey world, Kaleta committed an error when he hit Ranger Brad...
