Tough Turn Of Events For Flyers’ Draft Pick’s Dad

Thursday, June 29, was a dream-come-true day for the Mann family. The Philadelphia Flyers selected defenseman Matteo Mann in the seventh round of the NHL Draft.

Meanwhile, his dad was running the Ottawa Senators’ draft table in Nashville. Trent Mann was the Senators’ assistant general manager.

Matteo, a 6-foot-6, 222-pound defenseman, was the 199th player taken overall. He came into the Flyers’ system with the reputation of being a physical player who delivered punishing checks. It was a good match between player and the team that chose him.

Matteo’s final NHL Central Scouting ranking was 84 among North American skaters.

While Matteo was at the Flyers’ Development Camp in Voorhees last week, Trent was at the Senators’ Development Camp.

The family’s good fortune changed dramatically Tuesday. The Ottawa Sun reported that Trent and the Senators “parted ways.” Trent had been in his current position for only a year.

According to the Ottawa Sun, Trent joined the organization as a part-time scout in 2010 and went full-time in 2014. He became the Senators’ lead amateur scout in 2016.

Trent had two years left on his contract, according to the Ottawa Sun.

The Senators recently were sold to a group led by Toronto billionaire Michael Andlauer.

Father and son shared a great moment at the NHL Combine in Buffalo in early June. Matteo was interviewed by the Senators as part of the pre-draft preparations.

“It was a little weird because he came out, got me and told me to go in and he sat in the chair outside the room,” Matteo told NHL.com.

“The roles were reversed, which was pretty funny. The interview was mostly about my game. Some teams joked about it just because it’s kind of special that he’s here and I’m here with him.”
