The Nashville Predators may have been a big sleeper team to become buyers this trade deadline. They’ll sure be a headache in the clustered Central Division, while adding a top-6 forward in Andrei Kostitsyn from the Montreal Canadiens, who is the brother of Nashville’s Sergei. The price tag: Just a second-round 2013 NHL Entry Draft pick, and a conditional fifth-round pick. From the Tennesseean:
“We added a little bit of weight, we got a bit older and I think it will be a really good add. It worked out with Sergei and we’re hoping it will work out with Andrei as well,” Coach Barry Trotz said. “We have a strong group and a real special group that likes each other and has fun and plays hard. That’s all we’re looking for, is guys who will fit in and play hard for us, and Andrei is a talent. …
Andrei has 12 goals and 12 assists this season in 53 games. He had his best season in the 2007-08 season with 53 points. Take: No big sweat off Montreal. They’re down and out. And they’ll rebuild this off-season, which is simply an easier task in the new day and age of a salary cap in the NHL. Kostitsyn hasn’t been too sharp this season, and he’s a top 6 on the Canadiens. There’d be a slim chance Kostitsyn would be re-signed with his cap hit of $3.25 million. He’s hardly worth that, and he may differ with that. Good for the Habs on dumping him off, and best of luck to the Predators on taking the gamble. Maybe a change of scenery and a little motivation is what he needs.
