The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Mark Fistric from Dallas in exchange for a third-round pick at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. I would not recommend picking up Mark Fistric in any type of fantasy hockey format as he'll be recorded two assists in 60 contests last season with the Dallas Stars.Having said this, I'm very excited about this acquisition, Fistric is an Edmonton native, and he will bring home with the brand of hockey that was missing from the Oilers defense without him. The 26-year-old former first rounder, (28th overall in 2004) plays hard-nosed defensive minded game. Fistric comes in at 6’2”, 233-pounds, the rearguard finished in the top 20 in the NHL in hits last season, and was 10th in the NHL in 2009-10 with a +27.I believe anytime general manager in the NHL would have made this trade for a third round pick, Mark Fistric is the ultimate team-first type of player. Fistric will be the steady stay-at-home defenseman that will sure up some of the mistakes made by the young kids. Fistric is drawing comparisons to Jason Strudwick in his prime.Mark Fistric will be a free agent at the end of the year, however, even with the short season this was a smart move by the Edmonton Oilers great work addressing the need! For more great posts, be sure to visit HockeyFanLand.

Bill Meltzer: Star Gazing: Stars Pulled Trigger on Fistric a Little Soon

Ever since former first-round pick Mark Fistric had his seeming breakthrough 2009-10 season, he's been shuttling in and out of the Dallas Stars' long-term plans on defense. Yesterday, the team made clear that the impending unrestricted free agent was neither a part of the short-term or long-term plan. He was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for a third-round draft pick. ...

Richard Cloutier: Oilers Make a Trade!

News coming down the pipe just now that the Oilers have acquired defenseman Mark Fistric from the Dallas Stars for a 3rd round draft pick. Fistric is exactly what the Oilers were looking for as a defensive upgrade: He's younger (26) left-handed, big (6' 2", 233), a defensive defenseman, and he's local (born in Edmonton). Fistric is also a reasonable cap hit: ...

Benn negotiations remain confounding

Team executives in our major sports negotiate contracts all of the time and therefore see all sorts of scenarios. But, the rarest of them all is when they have a mountain of money and want to give it to a player, only to find out that his camp is somewhat reluctant to accept it. That appears to be the situation here, 72 hours before opening night in the NHL, as the Dallas Stars...

Oilers' Sutton probably out for the season

One day after the Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Mark Fistric from Dallas in exchange for a third-round pick in the upcoming drafft, the Oilers said defenseman Andy Sutton is not expected to play this season because of his knee problems. "We don't believe Andy will be playing this year," general manager Steve Tambellini said, according to the Edmonton Journal...

Richard Cloutier: Hurt No More?

Theo Peckham is injured. Regardless, I still think today's Mark Fistric deal gets done anyway if you're the Edmonton Oilers. Offering up a 3rd round draft pick for a competent 5/6 defenseman who's big, throws more than 200 hits per year, and blocks shots like a demon is a small price to pay to immediately upgrade the hockey team. The Oilers just became a much harder...

AHL and CHL Prospect Report and The Week Ahead 1/14-1/20

Texas Stars January has been very kind to the Texas Stars as they ran their winning streak to a season high six games. It’s even more impressive when you consider that the Stars had their roster gutted for their final game of the week as good chunk of the roster went up to Dallas for training camp and they were playing three games in three days. Goaltending was the story...

Bill Meltzer: Star Gazing: Eakin Is Coming Along Nicely, Glennie Isn't

The Dallas Stars decision last join to trade erstwhile second-line center Mike Ribeiro to the Washington Capitals for 21-year-old center prospect Cody Eakin and a second-round pick was a pretty clear indication that the Stars wanted to go in a different direction after narrowly missing the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. The subsequent acquisition of Derek Roy relieved...
