Drew Stafford is an easy target. He was a high draft pick, had a promising collegiate career and now has a 30-goal season to go along with his hefty salary. However, he seems to be just part of the problem for a team that has been underperforming for nearly each of their games thus far. With Lindy Ruff being relieved of his duties as head coach this week, fans can hope for an immediate change in the team’s play but should also know that there will be a plateau in terms of results after the first week or so. The overall performance of the team may not matter much for the rest of the season. They may have dug too deep of a hole to climb out of – although being five games under .500 isn’t too big of an issue. What I’m interested to see is how specific players, like Drew Stafford, will respond with a new voice behind the bench. Stafford, a favorite whipping boy of many fans, certainly has the look of a player who needed to hear a different voice in order to get the wheel...

Lindy Ruff Wants To Return To Coaching

from John Vogl of Sabres Edge at the Buffalo News, Ruff saved his most emotional thanks for the fans as he fought tears through a cracking voice. "Last and most importantly is our fans," said Ruff, who spent 26 of his 53 years as part of the Sabres. "The people who have made this place special for myself and my family. "It's a place I call home...

Lindy Ruff will be back to work soon

Lindy Ruff might not be unemployed for long. Freshly fired after 15 years behind the Buffalo Sabres' bench (replaced by Ron Rolston of the AHL Rochester Americans), Ruff could be entrenched as head coach of another squad shortly -- if he's interested in taking on a new challenge right away. The general consensus amongst NHL coaches and general managers seems to be that the...

Classic Video (1980) - Lindy Ruff vs. Billy Smith

One of my favorite Lindy Ruff clips, and a childhood memory of mine when he was a player.  Ruff attacks Islanders goaltender Billy Smith after being highsticked during Game 6 of the 1980 Semifinals.

Mikhail Grigorenko Returns To Sabres Lineup

Mikhail Grigorenko is hoping to see more playing time under Ron Rolston(Photo: Rick Stewart/Getty Images) Buffalo’s top prospect is returning to the ice. After sitting that last three games, and four of the last six, Mikhail Grigorenko will be back in the Buffalo lineup when the team takes the ice on Saturday night against the New York Islanders. It’ll be his first chance to...

Sabres React To Ruff Dismissal

fromPierre LeBrun of ESPN, On his way out of the Air Canada Centre after a morning skate that was missing a familiar face, Ryan Miller reflected on Day 1 without his longtime coach Lindy Ruff.  "Lindy did a lot for me in my career," the Buffalo Sabres star netminder told ESPN.com Thursday before a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. "He gave me an...

After 26 Years, Lindy Ruff Is Done With The Buffalo Organization

from John Vogl of the Buffalo News, Lindy Ruff dreamed of holding the Stanley Cup in his adopted town of Buffalo. He pictured himself skating around Memorial Auditorium with the chalice over his head. He envisioned himself clutching the Cup on the bench in First Niagara Center. He held onto the dream for half of his life. Now he has to let it go. Ruff’s run in Blue...

Buffalo fires Ruff; Trotz now longest tenured coach in NHL…

The 6-10-1 Buffalo Sabres have lost four of their last five games, have the second worst power play in the league and have the worst face-off percentage (44.6%) in the NHL. If all that wasn’t enough, they just received word that their coach of 15 years has been fired. Lindy Ruff spent 1,165 games behind the Sabres bench. He was hired on July 21, 1997 and compiled a 571-432-78...

Video: Lindy Ruff Press Conference

Courtesy of WKBW-TV in Buffalo, here is video of Lindy Ruff's farewell press conference today:

What difference does a coach make?

In the wake of Lindy Ruff being fired, it seems like a good time to talk about one of my pet peeves in the coaching area.  Oh, who am I kidding?  It has nothing to do with Ruff or McLellan or any head coach.  It's all about the "surprising revelation" that Kevin Kurz shared about Antti Niemi and how he brought his Finnish goaltending coach back with him from Finland...

QCS Buffalo Water Cooler: Sabres Fire Ruff

This week’s Water Cooler features QCS writers Ryan Talbot. What’s your initial reaction to the Sabres firing long time head coach Lindy Ruff? The Sabres shocked the NHL on Wednesday after firing Lindy Ruff. (Photo: Kevin Hoffman, USA TODAY Sports) Brandon Hess: Many will argue that this day should have come years ago, but alas Lindy Ruff’s tenure has come to an end.  In the...

Too Many ‘Accidents’ In The NHL

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News, Had a very interesting conversation with Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier Thursday night and no, it wasn’t about his team’s coaching situation. It began with me asking whether players’ skates are too sharp these days and went off on a tangent about equipment and safety. Clearly, Regier has given this subject a lot of thought and he doesn’t...

Youth at the Pivot

We’re 18 games into a season that has been marked by inconsistent play by the team on the ice and a frustration level of fans that has reached a boiling point.  There is plenty of blame to go around for the team’s slow start.  The most obvious problem that the Sabres have is poor coverage in the defensive zone, and I don’t blame that solely on the defensemen.  Any hockey...

Farewell Old Friend

The Toughest Parts The reaction, as you might expect, has been a cautionary one. Within a half hour of the news, coaches from around the NHL — men who have been Lindy Ruff’s colleague for more than a decade in different capacities — shared with reporters their feelings about Ruff as a person and coach and that they are sure he’ll get another chance somewhere. To a man...
