Filip Kuba of the Ottawa Senators is posting a +28 +/- rating so far this season.  This is the highest +/- for any player who is not a member of the Boston Bruins.  Last season he posted a -26 +/- rating.  There were five worse players in the league by raw +/-.  Since Kuba played only 64 games in 2010/11, he had the worst +/- on a per game basis in the league.  We are seeing a significant improvement in +/- from Filip Kuba.  Does this show a considerable improvement in his play? +/- ratings are significantly influenced by the team for which a player plays.  The Ottawa Senators are significantly better this year than they were last year.  Last year Ottawa was one of the worst teams in the NHL and had the worst +/- in the East Conference.  This year they are a probable playoff team who has scored more goals than they have allowed.  A significant portion of Kuba’s +/- improvement is from team improvement. "Erik Karlsson's a Run-and-Gun, Wild Card Kind of Guy"

During the second intermission, Hockey Night in Canada's Hotstove Panel kicked around the topic of Erik Karlsson's upcoming contract negotiations. As always, my thoughts are in bold. Tim Wharnsby started the discussion by saying: "About ten days ago, Don Meehan, Craig Oster's actually the agent for Erik Karlsson, and Pat Morris all met with Bryan Murray and...

Five On Five: Erik Karlsson

So I was recently mucking around NHL.com and Behind the Net to gauge how effective a few particular Norris Trophy candidates have been while playing at five-on-five this season, and put together the chart below. The pressure will be on Michalek in B's vs Sens matchup

When Edmonton Oilers forward Raffi Torres knocked out Milan Michalek with a late hit to the head back in the 2006 playoffs, it ended a promising season for the Sharks' young rookie forward.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v0KC91Wuz2k It also served as a major momentum shifter in the series, as it destabilized the chemistry of Sharks lineup combinations, which up to that point in...

Hurricanes-Senators Preview

The playoff-bound Ottawa Senators appear to be getting hot at just the right time. A visit from the deflated Carolina Hurricanes seems unlikely to slow them down.
