At least that's the case according to some particular "fancy stats."
Via the Sporting News:
Who's the most valuable player on the Pittsburgh Penguins? Is it the face of the NHL, Sidney Crosby? Is it the league's reigning MVP, Evgeni Malkin? How about goal machine James Neal?
According to Michael Schuckers, an associate professor of statistics at St. Lawrence University, the answer is — wait for it — Tyler Kennedy.
Schuckers will present a paper this week at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in which he unveils a new catch-all statistic called Total Hockey Rating (THoR), designed to evaluate how many wins individual players are responsible for.
"The idea is that we have all this information that we get in these play-by-play files and we want to assess what is the value of an individual play on one hand, and so we went into a bunch of ways of trying to look at that, and also consider the things we know about hockey, like that s...

Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin was recently placed on the Injured Reserve after sustaining a concussion from a hit by Erik Gudbranson. Malkin has been cleared to practice but not for contact and had some fun at the end of a recent practice. Malkin flipped a puck straight up in the air from center ice and it landed directly in the puck bucket. To put the puck into a...
As we sit here now the Penguins still have Kris Letang tied up for another year next year at $3.5 million. He will be due to get a VERY large raise in 2014-15 and as a UFA could command 6-7 per...easy. Last year Letang finished 17th among defensemen in scoring currently this year he sits at third with 15 points in 17 games. Oh, by the way, the 42 points Letang had last year were in 51 games....
One question I have spent a lot of time thinking about is at what point in their career a player first establishes himself as a Hall of Famer regardless of what may happen in the rest of their career. This selection made the threshold about a month ago and I have yet to write the post. I believe Evgeni Malkin has now cemented himself as a future Hall of Famer.
The final step...
John Buccigross tweeted this out. According to the guy who posted it, he stopped by the rink and filmed this today?
It is ****** video, but Malkin puts a puck in a bag sitting upright from way past mid-ice. Also, he did this with a concussion.
So much for being excited about Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun laid his second straight egg in less than a week. If you want to pay someone to **** up, Brent Johnson was half the cost. Vokoun's spent so much time on his back lately, the grandma from Life Alert is worried about her job security.
The Pens didn't do him any favors, though. The Pens took a million penalties...
As the Penguins get set to face the Carolina Hurricanes tonight for the first time since the trade last Summer that sent Jordan Staal to Carolina and returned to the Penguins Brandon Sutter and Brian Dumoulin and the draft pick that allowed them to select Derek Pouliot.
Let’s take a quick look at how both sides have fared in this trade so far:
Carolina has played 18 games, has...

True story: The summer after the Penguins Cup win, we were invited to a party to see the Stanley Cup. We waited like 3 hours in some line...
Tomas Vokoun was looking for a pleasant homecoming when he returned to Florida to face his formal team. Instead, he was pulled in the second period and the Penguins were forced to play catchup. While they did even the score before the second intermission, a mistake by Kris Letang and a perfect shot from Tomas Fleischmann ended up making the difference as the Panthers defeated the...

With Evgeni Malkin injured, Brandon Sutter has had to step up and move outside of his typical third line center role. Jordan Staal knows a thing or two about that situation. Tonight the Pittsburgh Penguins face Jordan Staal for the first time...
