The top unsigned player in the NHL is forward Jamie Benn, and he wasn’t at the opening of Dallas Stars camp Sunday.... Â
"I’m optimistic that we’ll have him back on the team, but it won’t be today," Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk told ESPN.com on Sunday morning. "We’ll focus on the guys we have here because it’s a short camp and we need to get ready. But in the meantime, certainly we’ll keep working away at trying to get Jamie re-signed."Â
The No. 2 name among unsigned players is blueliner P.K. Subban. Things can obviously change quickly with one phone call, but as of Sunday morning my understanding was that things were not close on that front; both sides were still far apart.Â
On the flip side, Michael Del Zotto was at Rangers camp Sunday as he agreed to a two-year deal worth an average of $2.55 million per season. That’s an important signing for the Cup-contending Rangers.Â

Newest Stars bring plenty of talent to the ice
FRISCO, Texas-- After the Dallas Stars found themselves missing the playoffs for a fourth straight season thanks to dropping their final five games of last season, new owner Tom Gaglardi and other organizational brass knew some changes had to be made.
So, it wasn't a shocker to see longtime stars like Mike Ribeiro, who was traded to Washington on draft night, and Steve Ott...
Stars eager to get on ice with new arrival Jagr
(Eds: With AP Photos.) The Dallas Stars will have to wait one more day to see their newest acquisition on the ice.
Signed to a one-year free agent contract last summer, 40-year-old winger Jaromir Jagr didn't arrive in town from his native Czech Republic until early Friday before a case of jet lag delayed his initial appearance at the club's practice facility.

AHL and CHL Prospect Report and The Week Ahead 1/14-1/20
Texas Stars
January has been very kind to the Texas Stars as they ran their winning streak to a season high six games. It’s even more impressive when you consider that the Stars had their roster gutted for their final game of the week as good chunk of the roster went up to Dallas for training camp and they were playing three games in three days.
Goaltending was the story...
Jaromir Jagr (Take full advantage Stars fans)
When my older brother and I were kids our dad took us to an NHL All-Star practice. Admittedly, almost as exciting as the practice itself was not having to go to school that day as the practice was in the afternoon. It was 1989 and the game was being held in Edmonton that year. I [...]
Bill Meltzer: Star Gazing: Did 'Pesky Stars' Sacrifice Too Much Grit in Off-Season?
Over the last two seasons, the Dallas Stars forged a team identity as a scrappy underdog team that may have been a tad short on depth but never stopped battling and never quit on a game even if they faced an uphill climb. Comeback ability and all-around grit were key reasons why the Stars even came close to making the playoffs in 2011 and 2012.
If you combine the 2010-11 and...
Eklund: Contract Length Main Issue w/ Getting Benn Signed
As soon as the Edmonton Oilers signed Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle to seven-year and six-year extensions that will carry $6 million cap hits, there was a target figure for the Jamie Benn camp to seek with the Dallas Stars.
A good source tells me that the main hurdle for the Stars' restricted free agent to sign before the lockout was the length of the contract. It has never...
Richard Cloutier: Oilers Make a Trade!
News coming down the pipe just now that the Oilers have acquired defenseman Mark Fistric from the Dallas Stars for a 3rd round draft pick.
Fistric is exactly what the Oilers were looking for as a defensive upgrade: He's younger (26) left-handed, big (6' 2", 233), a defensive defenseman, and he's local (born in Edmonton). Fistric is also a reasonable cap hit: ...
Bill Meltzer: Star Gazing: Will Nilstorp Crack Opening Night Roster?
Dallas Stars coach Glen Gultuzan indicated yesterday that the club may choose to go into the abbreviated 2013 season with three goaltenders. Given the heavy schedule of games and practices in the next few weeks, Gulutzan said there may be a need to spread around the early work.
Kari Lehtonen, of course, will get the bulk of the playing time once the regular season starts. But...
Northwest NHL stars fantasy prognostications
prog·nos·ti·cate
1. To predict according to present indications or signs; foretell.
After missing nearly four months of on ice action, the NHL owners and the NHLPA finally figured out how to fairly divide their annual financial intake.
Fans on the other hand were not only left to find something to replace their nightly on puck action, but almost as importantly, their fantasy fix...
50 NHL Fantasy Predictions
from Matt Cubeta of NHL.com,
1. Last year I said Datsyuk would reach 100 points. This year I'm saying he won't top 40 points -- 40 points in 48 games is a rate of .83 points-per-game, which would've tied him for 44th in the NHL last season. Between his declining stats, potential for injury and his lack of shots and PIMs, he might not be worth an early draft pick...
Detroit Red Wings Release 2013 Schedule: Home Opener Jan. 22 vs. Dallas Stars
At long last, the NHL season is set to begin, and the Detroit Red Wings will open — as reported multiple times — on Jan. 19 at St. Louis. The Wings’ home opener will take place three days later on Jan. 22, following a Jan. 21 visit to Columbus, when the Dallas Stars visit Joe Louis Arena.
Detroit plays six games in the month of January: at St. Louis, at Columbus, vs. Dallas...
Will Ryan O’Reilly Stay In Russia?
from Tim Wharnsby of CBC,
The Colorado Avalanche will have more difficulty luring back restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly from Russia than the Montreal Canadiens and Dallas Stars will have in locking up their unsigned youngsters, P.K. Subban and Jamie Benn, respectively.
Metallurg Magnitogorsk, the KHL team that O'Reilly plays for, is paying the 21-year-old forward...
