The University of Wisconsin hockey team got its first home victory of the season Thursday night, winning 5-0 against Alabama-Huntsville at Kohl Center.
The Badgers (3-7-5, 2-5-5 WCHA) recorded season bests in goals scored (five) and fewest shots allowed (nine) and tied a season high for shots on net (37) on their way to a comfortable victory.
Freshman Nic Kerdiles opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal at the four-minute mark of the opening period. Michael Mersch doubled the Badgers' lead less than three minutes later with a power-play goal.
Mersch scored his second goal with 4:31 to go in the second period. That score was Mersch's team-high 11th of the season. Despite Wisconsin's 17-shot onslaught in the period, Alabama-Huntsville goaltender John Griggs kept his team within striking distance with 16 saves in second period alone.
