Tanev a must-sign It isn’t ideal for a Vancouver Canucks team with Cup aspirations to be at an impasse with a important part heading into the year- ideally all of your core is healthy, in a good frame of mind and together for the start of camp.  The Vancouver Canucks took another step in having everything in place for camp by agreeing to a one year pact with RFA defenseman Chris Tanev at a reasonable $1.5m. On the other hand, maybe Tanev would’ve held out into the start of the season, came back better than ever and eventually win a Norris Trophy a-la P.K. Subban of 2012-13, highly unlikely though. Tanev is a defensively solid defenseman who won’t win you any fantasy hockey pools. He is calm and composed and makes smart plays more often than not, including the ever-crucial strong first pass out of his own end. He is still young at 23 years old and has developed into a very efficient NHL defenseman after going undrafted and then subsequently signed out of college. Having only six defenseman signed, including rookie Frank Corrado and a depth man in Yannick Weber, made the Tanev arrangement so crucial. At $1.5m for this season, it also leaves the Canucks with roughly $2.85m of cap space remaining to allocate to another piece that can help the squad (I’m personally hoping for Damien Brunner although we will need another Dman). Chris Tanev got a new 1 year contract today! This deal tells me a couple things: neither side wanted to or could figure out a long term deal in terms of fair price at this point in time, so they went with a one year reasonable $1.5m so neither would be locked in to a multi-year deal they didn’t like. It also seems that both sides, especially Mike Gillis & co., wanted to see what this season holds before heading into an offseason where a lot of monetary and personel decisions are to be made before they look at tendering a longer contract. Chris Tanev may not be a flashy player or put up big numbers, but he is very effective in his role, much like a Travis Hamonic or a Jared Cowen (but with less pedigree). He is exactly what you want as a number four or five defenceman on this Canucks team, a reasonably priced reliable young defenseman that you can roll out there with confidence in most situations. T he fact that he is only 23 years old, and does have some numbers that indicate there may be room to grow offensively- as this college and AHL stats lead you to believe. When it all comes down to it, it looks like both sides compromised on a reasonable one-year deal because they couldn’t come to terms on a longer one. It should be interesting to see what happens with Tanev next summer, but in the meantime Canucks fans should be happy that the deal is done and he can focus his efforts into on-ice success. Albert Albert! Also in the news today Mike Gillis announced they have resigned Andrew Alberts. Team Radio is reporting the deal is “for 1-yr at 600k.” From Canucks.com “Alberts, 32, appeared in 24 games in 2012.13, recording one assist, 32 penalty minutes and 39 hits. The 6’5”, 218-pound defenceman has appeared in 449 career games, recording 55 points (8-47-55) and 492 penalty minutes over the span of eight NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes and Canucks.” Not sure how I feel about the signings today in #Canucks land.
