Time to Renew the Rivalry Good afternoon, folks. The Canucks and Flames meet tomorrow and whenever these two teams get together, you can’t help but think of their rivalry, or the rivalry that once that once was. Over the years Vancouver’s dominance in the North West division and the rest of the teams out right crapping of the winning games bed, it would appear that rivalries are few and far between in the division anymore. That is unless you’re a Minnesota Wild fan and in that case the Wild/Canucks feud is just one that won’t die. I hope you were able to cut through that sarcasm with relative ease, but either way, I wanted to take a look at some of the classic Flames and Canucks games over the years. Games that sent one team home, brought one back from the brink of elimination and one that shows that as intense as some of the games between these two teams were, there’s a level of respect between the two. Enjoy. Joel Otto – April 15th, 1989 The strange part about this is I remember as a kid watching this with my old man and him cheering for the Flames. What’s also funny is that both times the Canucks and Flames had gone to a game 7 in the playoffs and the Flames won, they went on to the Stanley Cup finals. Brendan Morrison – April 17th, 2004 It felt like this playoff series went on forever, this game sure did. Just over two minutes into the third overtime, Brendan Morrison finds a path to the front of the net and beats Mikka Kiprusoff to send the series to a seventh and deciding game. Daniel Sedin – April 10th, 2010 I was at this game and was seated almost directly above where this happened. The “MVP” chants were deafening, I’ll also never forget the 70+ year old man walking out of the building wearing his second generation Flames jersey screaming into my section: “Yeah, well at least we have a fu****g cup, you losers!” Ah, memories. Pavel Bure – April 30th, 1994 I never really cared for Bure, don’t ask me why, but I remember watching this one with my Dad and him asking: “Who’s going to score the goal?” I replied Bure. Sure enough, seconds later, Bure scores the goal in double overtime to send the Canucks on to the play the Dallas Stars. Jarome Iginila/Trevor Linden – April 5th, 2008. This was a special game. The Canucks out of the playoffs and it was looking like Trevor Linden was about to play his last game as a Canuck. Well, not only was it his last game, but the Canucks were boot stomped by the Flames. Jarome Iginla scored his 50th goal of the season, received an unusual ovation from the people in General Motors place that night and he also did something I’ve never seen before, probably one of the classiest things I’ve ever seen during a regular season NHL game. That’s all from me. Lets hope the Canucks can turn it around against the Flames before they head out on the road. CLICK HERE NOW TO CHECK OUT THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS CLUBHOUSE AT NWSPORTSBEAT!
