One of the NHL’s leading scorers through the first week is set to miss some time. According to head coach Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek will not play this afternoon when his team takes on the winless Washington Capitals at 3pm in D.C..  Vanek suffered a muscle strain in Buffalo’s 3-1 loss to Carolina on Friday when he fell and went hard into the end boards. Ruff said after the game on Friday that Vanek would have Saturday off of practice, and they would reevaluate Sunday morning whether or not he could play. After trying to skate in the morning, the decision was made to keep him out of the lineup. “He’s day to day really. He skated this morning, but isn’t quite there,” said Ruff to WGR550′s Paul Hamilton. Vanek is one of the NHL’s leading scorers with 9 points (3 + 6) in four games; he is the fastest player to nine points in Sabres history. He has been on the ice for 11 of Buffalo’s 12 goals on the season. In fact, the Sabres top line of Vanek, Cody Hodgson, and Jason Pominville have combined for 20 of the team’s 31 points this year. With no Vanek, the lineup will be changed quite a bit to try and find an offensive spark for a team that managed just one goal on 41 shots on Friday night. Rookie Marcus Foligno took Vanek’s spot on the top line in practice, but Ruff told the media that that may not necessarily be the line we see against the Capitals. Due to the injury, Matt Ellis, who has been a scratch the past two games, will return to the lineup. Buffalo faces a Washington team that is the only team without a win in the NHL. In fact, they have just one point which is worst in the league.   *photo courtesy of US-Presswire*   The post Vanek Out Versus Washington appeared first on Queen City Sports.

GARTH: Grigo In, Vanek Out

Dual plot lines running in Washington today. Thomas Vanek's back strain will not allow him to play today. Rookie Mikhail Grigorenko will play his fifth game if his NHL tryout. Grigo will get top six minutes playing with Ott and Stafford. More to come....

Clearing Up Misconceptions On Grigorenko

There've been some reports coming from mainstream media outlets today stating that Mikhail Grigorenko has to stay with the Sabres for the remainder of the season if he plays another NHL game.  This is simply not true.  It's just a question of whether or not the club is willing to count this as Year One of his entry level contract. Granted, it's not common for a team...

GARTH: Should He Stay Or Should He Go?

Should he stay or should he go? Darcy Regier and Lindy Ruff have a serious decision to make right now. To keep Mikhail Grigorenko in Buffalo to finish what he has started. Or, send him back to the Quebec Remparts to continue his junior hockey career? The decision is a no-brainer to me. You keep the kid and let him flourish in Buffalo. Were it not forTyler Ennis’ offensive awakenin...

GARTH: Vanek Mechanic

Thomas Vanek is the first player in Sabres history to record eight points in the first three games of the season. Five players have had seven in the first three games: Gilbert Perreault (1972-72 and 1979-80), Don Luce (1975-76), Danny Gare (1979-80), Bob Sweeney (1992-93) and Pat LaFontaine (1992-93). Sabres Drop Third Straight, Lose 3-2 in Washington

With a chance to get back into the win column after back to back losses to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Buffalo Sabres came up short in the Verizon Center falling 3-2 to the Washington Capitals.  The loss, the Sabres third in a row, drops Buffalo to 2-3-0-0 on the season.  The win was the first this year for Washington who had dropped their first four contests for their worst start...
