Thomas Vanek scored a power-play goal with 4:38 left, and the New York Islanders rallied from two goals down for a second straight day and beat the New York Rangers 5-3 on Tuesday night. Vanek capped the comeback as the Rangers were trying to kill a penalty for too many men on the ice. Colin McDonald and defenseman Thomas Hickey scored in the second period to get the Islanders even. Matt Martin scored a rare goal in the first, and Frans Nielsen added an empty-netter. Kevin Poulin made 30 saves in the Islanders' ninth win in their past 11 road games. John Tavares had three assists and Kyle Okposo added two in front of a nearly full crowd on a snowy night in New York. Rick Nash scored twice in the first period for his second straight multigoal game, and Chris Kreider added a goal for the Rangers, who had won three in a row. Cam Talbot made 32 saves while subbing for Henrik Lundqvist, who missed the game due to illness. It was the first time in eight games the Rangers allowed...

Thomas Vanek And Andrew MacDonald Updates

from Arthur Staple of Newsday, -- Snow and Steve Bartlett, the agent for Thomas Vanek, have had some dialogue over the past few weeks and that should pick up in the next couple of weeks. Snow and the Islanders need to know in fairly short order if Vanek is willing to sign long-term. If not, it’s obvious (though Snow didn’t expressly say) that Snow would begin fielding offers...

Hot Tavares, Vanek & Okposo Lead the Offensive Charge for New York Islanders

Getty Images   Six players in the NHL have tallied 20 points since Dec. 17  but none are as hot as New York Islanders captain John Tavares who has 10 goals and 12 assists in his last 16 games. In the 16 game stretch, Tavares has been held off of the scoresheet on three occasions and completed four games with two or more points, including a five point (3g,2a) night against the Dallas...

Islanders say rehabbing Lubomir Visnovsky won't play in Olympics

Lubomir Visnovsky says he still hasn't given up hope of trying to represent Slovakia at the Olympics next month, but the Islanders will not be allowing Visnovsky to go to Sochi. "This is the first time in my life I don't do anything for three months," said Visnovsky, who had a vigorous skate at Madison Square Garden following the Islanders' morning spin Tuesday...

Isles’ MacDonald wants $5M per year

About a week ago, PHT asked how large of a raise New York Islanders defenseman Andrew MacDonald might receive with his next deal. That much is still very much in question, but New York Newsday has word on what he wants: $5 million per year. Understatement: that’s a pretty big jump from $550K per season. The Islanders are likely aware that the 27-year-old is far more important...

If traded, Thomas Vanek open to signing with Isles after season

With comments in recent days ranging from Steve Bartlett, his agent, to ESPN's Pierre Lebrun and then some response from Islanders GM Garth Snow on Wednesday regarding Thomas Vanek's contract status, I thought I'd talk to Vanek about it Thursday morning. Candid as always, Vanek said he understands that the Islanders need to know in the next week or two whether he'...

Okposo rallies Islanders to 4-3 SO win over Flyers

Kyle Okposo scored the tying goal on a power play late in regulation and then netted the decisive tally in the shootout for the New York Islanders, who rallied past Philadelphia 4-3 Monday to earn a rare win over the Flyers. The Islanders used a dominant third period to erase a 3-1 deficit and force overtime. Brock Nelson made it a one-goal game at 8:16, and Okposo tied it with...

Okposo rallies Islanders to shootout win over Flyers

New York's latest loss to the Philadelphia Flyers was very fresh in the minds of the Islanders when it appeared they were headed for another one in the home-and-home rematch. Out of nowhere, the Islanders stormed back from a two-goal deficit in a dominant third period and handed the Flyers the kind of loss they have been pinning on opponents all season. Kyle Okposo scored the...

Islanders put on snow show to rally past Rangers

One month and one day ago, the Islanders’ season turned around in a game at the Garden. So on Tuesday night, back at the Garden, they stared down a 3-1 deficit to the Rangers and never flinched. “I really think we controlled most of the game,” said John Tavares, the Islanders star who was speaking about his team, but could have been speaking about himself, putting on a superlative...

On the Losing End: Islanders rally in 3rd, beat Flyers in shootout

Anders Nilsson stops Sean Couturier to seal a shootout win for the Islanders over the Flyers. (Photo Courtesy of ESPN.com) So many times this season, the Philadelphia Flyers were trying to come from behind. Finally, on Monday, they were protecting a third-period lead.
