Man, this was awesome. Seriously it was as good as it gets are far as fights in hockey. On Friday night the Philadelphia Flyers were trailing the Washington Captials 7-0 early in the third period when they decided they had enough of getting blown out. Philadelphia’s fans were chanting for the removal of general managers Paul Holmgren when the damn finally broke for the players. Winger Wayne Simmonds chased after a puck and laid a huge hit before dropping the gloves and going toe-to-toe with Tom Wilson. Then everyone else got involved, including the goalies. Flyers goalie Ray Emery really wanted to get himself some, so he went after Caps goalie Branden Holtby, who initially wanted no part of the scrap. But Emery pulled Holby down and proceeded to wail on Washington’s 24-year-old netminder. Video of the brawl is below: My first question is why didn’t anyone on the Capitals come to the aid of Holtby, who clearly didn’t want to fight? Emery got two minutes for leaving the crease, two minutes for instigating the fight, five for fighting and a 10-minute game misconduct. Holtby just got the five for fighting. All-in-all the brawl led to a whopping 114 total penalty minutes.
