It only took two games for the off-season acquired Jamal Mayers to get into a scrum.
And he did it against the former popular Blackhawk Jake Dowell, a University of Wisconsin alumni who worked his way up in the Blackhawks’ system.
Talk about send a message.
The proverbial scrap signaled no boundaries of respect from one new Blackhawks to a former. For two teams who similarly scrapped for the same playoff spot last year, and for two players who have since then were on different teams, the fight sent a different message.
It was simply, for Mayers, doing what he was brought to Chicago to do: enforce.
The grittier and more physical Blackhawks have that tapestry of bruisers in Mayers and Daniel Carcillo.
And so far, so good. Here’s the video of Mayers edging a clean fight out from Dowell, who exactly wasn’t the cleanest player coming up from the Rockford IceHogs.
The Blackhawks went on to win that game 5-2, and will next play host to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday, which is the home team to Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews.
