It’s often you’ll hear of a player who is inspired by his coach. But how about being inspired by the general manager?

Such was the case for Ryan Malone when he dashed in the neutral zone, flipped the puck, split the defenders and found the back of the net in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime win against the Winnipeg Jets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning forward scored the goal with four minutes remaining in the first period.

And here’s how Malone was inspired by his GM, according to the Tampa Bay Times:

Lightning LW Ryan Malone once saw a video clip of GM Steve Yzerman, then with the Red Wings, flip a puck over a defenseman to score into an empty net. That, Malone said, was the inspiration for the imaginative goal he scored against the Jets on Saturday.

Yzerman’s reply was: “He took it to a whole other level.”

That, he did.
