That is exactly what the New York Rangers have after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers by a score of 4-2 last night at Madison Square Garden.
The team came out and played an almost perfect home game by cashing in on their opportunities, never quitting on plays, forechecking, playing solid defense, and getting terrific goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist. Put these all together and you have another solid win on home ice.
With the win, the Rangers are now tied with the Flyers for the Atlantic Division lead and are second in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the Boston Bruins. Not bad for a team that no one knew just how good they were going to be or what they were capable of.
For starters, the team was certainly good at deflecting pucks past Flyers’ netminder Ilya Bryzgalov. Derek Stepan did just that on the team’s first goal in the second period when he deflected defenseman Stu Bickel’s shot from the point and surprised Bryzgalov to give the Blueshirts a 1-0 lead. The goal wa...

… yes, Ilya has Dr. J on his helmet. Say what you want, but Biron’s mask is by far the best of the bunch. Now, someone ask Bryz if he knows who Dr. J is and if he’s going to save the universe! Hat tip to Buzz on Broad
Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves in his second win over powerful Philadelphia this season, and rookie defenseman Stu Bickel had two more assists for the New York Rangers, who beat the Flyers 4-2 and moved into first place in the Atlantic Division on Friday night.
Bickel, in his third NHL game, helped set up goals by Derek Stepan and Ruslan Fedotenko in the second period. He has four...
As 2011 comes close to turning into 2012, I thought it would be an interesting idea to give each Flyer a gift that will help them through the stretch run of the season and into, hopefully, the playoffs:

There was a lot of hype surrounding the mathcup at Madison Square Garden. HBO cameras were there, and it was a preview of the upcoming Winter Classic. The Rangers dominated the entire game, and the Flyers were back on their heels. After the game, Ilya Bryzgalov was clearly frustrated when asked about the deflections that have gotten by him this year.
- Bryz played very...
Episode 1 lived up to the hype. It featured a whole lot of swearing (as usual), John Tortorella ripping into Marian Gaborik and Ilya Bryzgalov telling us about the universe.
Episode 2 also promises to be good (I won’t spoil anything for you).
Henrik Lundqvist stopped 28 of 30 shots he faced, and the Rangers scored twice in the second period by deflecting long shots by defenseman Stu Bickel.

The New York Rangers are in agreement that being in first place at the two-day Christmas break doesn't guarantee anything come April.
But after three wins in four nights against Atlantic Division foes, the Broadway Blueshirts are more than happy to be on top of the pack.
