Mike Yeo was delivered to the State of Hockey as a breath of fresh air.

Mike Yeo, shown in this file photo before the season, is looking to get back on track and lead the Wild to a playoff spot.

His players’ coach approach and tool box of young talent were just two of the talking points in the preseason to tout Yeo as a success story.

That held to be true for the first couple of months.

Five wins in the last 24 games. That’s the cloud hanging over the first-year coach.

From Fox Sports North:

“We need wins, for sure,” Yeo said Monday. “I would say that, I’m guessing at a minimum, we need about 18 of them. And that will get us to 94 points right now. With what we have, 27 games left, that puts us at a clip of winning about six of every nine games, which I think is very doable for us. I think we have a favorable schedule. I think the schedule combined with the fact that the teams we want to get ahead of, we have a chance to play them all. So I think it’s in our hands.”

With a phenomenal goalie tandem  of Niklas Backstrom and Josh Harding, and a competitive 144 goals against (Detroit has 135 GA), Minnesota needs an offensive shot in the arm with just 125 goals for. (Detroit has 182 GF.)

The Wilds’ tailspin to 12th place doesn’t have the bench boss too worried. He says every six out of nine games are needed to be salvaged for the rest of the year.

It’s “doable” he adds, but is it likely?

As flat as the Wild has been, not really. But anything is possible.

In the mean time, Yeo insists later on in the Fox Sports piece, “”we’re due for some luck here.”

It’ll take more than luck to turn this ship around.
