Exactly one week ago, Washington fans were preparing themselves for another Game 7 in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.  They knew it would be another close game — 12 of the previous 13 had been one-goal games, and that they would be holding their breath until it was over.  And, that’s how it turned out.  The difference this time was that the Capitals were unable to pull an upset on the more highly seeded team’s home ice, and lost 2-1 to the New York Rangers.  Shortly after 10:00 PM last Saturday, the Capitals’ season ended, and the look on the faces of the Capitals that were all over the internet said it all. Last summer, “The Hockey News”, the principal periodical covering the NHL predicted that the Capitals would hoist Lord Stanley for the first time in team history.  Some Capitals fans have blamed the ‘curse’ that appears to follow that prediction on yet another disappointing season.  This correspondent has a different view. What hurt the Capitals this season was their string of se

Mike Green Wants To Remain With The Capitals

from chuck Gormley of CSNWashington, Under the terms of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, to retain his rights the Capitals are required to make Green a qualifying offer equal to his 2011-12 salary of $5 million. “That’s something that we’ll talk about, I’m sure, after things settle down here,” Green said, “I’m excited to come back if that’s the game plan...

GARTH: Ovechkin Transforms Back Into Hunter

Alex Ovechkin and his Team Russia comrades are now gold medal winners. They defeated the never-say-die Slovaks in the final game of the IIHF World Hockey Championships. What a difference a week makes for Ovechkin, who goes from zero to hero. Former Washington Capitals bench boss, Dale Hunter, kept his captain Alex The GR8 on a tight choker chain for three rounds of playoff games. Ovechk...

Offseason Evaluation: Jeff Schultz

As the 2011-12 season has come to a close, the time has come to evaluate what it meant for the Capitals, both as a team and as individuals.  As such, as the summer progresses, I will be writing a report card, or individual evaluation, for each player who played in 9 (~10%) of the team's games, or 4 playoff games. Next up is defenseman Jeff Schultz, who finished his seventh...

Offseason Evaluation: John Erskine

As the 2011-12 season has come to a close, the time has come to evaluate what it meant for the Capitals, both as a team and as individuals.  As such, as the summer progresses, I will be writing a report card, or individual evaluation, for each player who played in 9 (~10%) of the team's games, or 4 playoff games. Next up is rough and tumble defenseman John Erskine, who completed...

Alexander Semin, Alexander Ovechkin Help Russia Capture Gold at World Championships, Earn No. 1 Seed for Olympics (Video)

The National Hockey League's Russian superstars did not fare well in the 2012 NHL Playoffs, but the Russians who exited the postseason early helped Team Russia capture the gold medal at the 2012 IIHF World Championships this weekend for the third time in the last five years. Pavel Datsyuk and the Detroit Red Wings suffered an early exit at the hands of the Nashville Predators...

A strange but true Ovechkin-Gomez comparison and the art of winning sans six goalie shot blockers

The Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson does an absolutely bang-up job of talking about the Washington Capitals possibly trading Alex Ovechkin, said team’s search for the right coach, even wondering whether the Canadiens will trade Tomas Plekanec and a host of other topics in his “Hockey World” column, but the real eyebrow-raisers for me came in the form of his conversation with...

Geno Malkin owns the World

Alex Ovechkin had no problem crowning Geno Malkin the best player in the world. It’s going to be hard to argue with him now that Geno was named MVP of the IIHF World Championships after Russia dominated Slovakia 6-2 in the gold medal game. Geno led the tournament with 11 goals and 19 points, including a hat trick against host Finland in the semis. Apparently Geno is the first...

Brooks believes Caps’ ouster should Holtby them to higher goaltending standards

Tomas Vokoun won’t be returning to Washington next season, and the Capitals are likely to undergo something of an overhaul after their second round ouster at the hands of the New York Rangers, but the New York Post’s Larry Brooks believes that employing another Dale Hunter-style coach to teach offensively-oriented personnel to abandon their natural style of play won’t work...
