The Vancouver Canucks’ seventh-round gem of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft showed off some late-game heroics today during Champions League play.

With two minutes remaining and his team’s net empty, Lucas Forsell battled for position in the slot, before pouncing on a rebound to cash in for his second goal of the year ( first in Champions League), sending his team to overtime.

In addition to the goal, Forsell enjoyed a season-high 18:07 during the game and contributed three shots on-net while finishing with a plus-one rating on the day.

He saw the ice twice in the game’s overtime period, and while he did not receive credit for an assist, was on the ice when his team scored the overtime-winning goal.

With the victory, his team has clinched a birth into the 2023-24 Champions League playoffs.

Playing for the top-ranked SHL club, Färjestad, Forsell has spent most of his time on the fourth line, seeing limited ice time so far this season.

While his playing style certainly compliments that of a bottom-six role player, we hoped that he would get some better looks as a more prominent member, after putting up 11 goals and 13 points over 35 games last season.

With that, it’s refreshing to see the 20-year-old seize the opportunity and make the most of it when given the chance.

His motor is always going, and Forsell brings tremendous pace to the game with each and every shift. In either end, he is not afraid to get into the corner to fight for his battles and has proved that he can toss in some offensive flair when given the opportunity.

Let’s hope his late-game heroics can offer some additional minutes down the line.

The diamond in the rough “feel good” story continues.
