On Thursday night, the Nashville Predators won their fourth consecutive game when they edged the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a dramatic come-from-behind victory in front of a sold out Bridgestone Arena. Captain Shea Weber scored two goals in less than three minutes in the final 4:24 of regulation to complete another third period comeback for the Predators. Down 3-1 with just over 3 minutes left in the second period, Jordin Tootoo scored his fifth goal of the season to make it a one goal game. With 4:24 left in the third period, the Predators were awarded their first power play of the game and were still trailing the Red Wings by a goal. “When we got that power play, we knew we had to score. We just waited to see what they were doing. [Suter] obviously made a great pass. Marty [Erat] had a good screen. We scored and the crowd came to life and got us really going,” Weber said. The Predators have the third best power play in the League. Despite the late comeback win, Nashville’s second in four contests, the Predators are still looking for more consistency in their game. “The last game against Calgary we were good in the first period, bad in the second and just good enough in the third.  It has been inconsistent play altogether. I don’t think it is specific to the third period. We are just really up and down right now. If we can try to level that off and play more consistent we will be a lot better,” Weber said. One thing that has been consistent for Nashville has been the play of Weber. With the two goals, Weber is now tied with rookie Craig Smith and David Legwand for the team lead goals (8) and is one point off the overall points lead. Weber has 23 points in 31 games to Smith’s 24 points. The Sicamous, British Columbia native is also third in the NHL in points from defensemen behind Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson (26) and Florida’s Brian Campbell (24). On Thursday night, Weber played the type of game and showed the type of leadership that exemplifies why the 26 year old finished second in voting for the Norris Trophy a season ago. Weber led the team in total playing time with 24:44, had 3 shots on goal, 4 hits, and two blocked shots. Weber’s two late third period goals propelled the Predators from a loss to a regulation win over one of the NHL’s hottest teams. Prior to Thursday night’s game, the Red Wings were 8-2-0 in their last 10 contests. Predators Head Coach Barry Trotz explained Weber’s first goal. “The first goal was absolutely a Shea Weber signature shot. We got him open for a shot and from the bench it looked like an absolute rocket. I think Jimmy  Howard actually caught it and it just turned his glove sideways it was so hard and so heavy and the puck just carried on into the net. That’s just what Shea does,” Trotz said. The Predators have now won three straight games at home and sit at 7-5-3 on the season at Bridgestone Arena. “The last couple of games we have been good at home, but before that we had been sub-par. You have to win your home games and hopefully continue to play good on the road and we will be alright,” Weber said. Nashville has now scored a power play goal in seven consecutive games and will look to continue that streak when the Predators wrap up its four-game homestand on Saturday night. Another Central Division rival, the St. Louis Blues, visit Music City. Puck drops shortly after 7 pm.

Red Wings-Predators quick take: smart hockey versus a dumb puck

The Detroit Red Wings let ‘em up off the mat, plain and simple. Absolutely dominating in terms of shots, puck possession, intensity and effort, the Red Wings were all too willing, all game long, to indulge the Nashville Predators’ cycle, and it bit Detroit to the expense of two points, losing 4-3 to Nashville in what was just a weird game. Shea Weber’s screened shot on the...
