Found July 04, 2013 on Fox Sports Detroit:
Wednesday was the first day that NHL teams were allowed to contact other teams' unrestricted free agents, and the Detroit Red Wings started burning up the phone lines early trying to determine which players, if any, have an interest in coming to Detroit. The Wings reached out to several players, but it appears their main targets are centers Stephen Weiss, Mike Riberio, and Matt Cullen; defensemen Andrew Ference and Marek Zidlicky with forward Jarome Iginla still part of the conversation. Weiss is the Wings primary objective; however, its believed that hes seeking a five-year, 25 million dollar deal. The Wings are hesitant about signing any UFA to a long term deal. But they found out Wednesday that every coveted UFA wants at least five years, including Riberio. There's concern about whether Riberio can still play with pace, if he still has enough left to go up and down the ice and play with an agitating grit. So if Detroit bites the bullet and commits to a player for f...

Red Wings overnight report: Fil gone, Colaiacovo bought out, DET unlikely to pursue big-ticket UFA’s

Okay, let's get down to brass tacks here. 1. The Red Wings swung and missed on Vincent Lecavalier. Why? He wanted five years and a no-trade clause, and he apparently has little concern for the concept that a team that has a shaky defense and no starting goaltender also has no cap space, barring trading Braydon Coburn and putting Chris Pronger on the LTIR, anyway, so what the...

Red Wings sign Luke Glendening; Chad Billins exits for Calgary

It's not a big signing given the magnitude of what's happened today, but it's great for the Red Wings and great for someone who was a walk-on with the University of Michigan and a try-out who earned an AHL-only contract with the Grand Rapids Griffins: RED WINGS SIGN FORWARD LUKE GLENDENING TO A ONE-YEAR DEAL ... Grand Rapids Native Helped Lead Griffins to the...

Stephen Weiss Reportedly Signs 5-Year Deal With Detroit Red Wings

Stephen Weiss looks like he’ll be the Detroit Red Wings’ new second-line center, with Valtteri Filppula headed out the door. Weiss and the Wings agreed to a five-year, $24.5-million deal on Friday, TSN reported. That’s an average of $4.9 million per season — or, slightly less than the $5 million per Filppula initially was believed to be seeking. Filppula’s number still...

Wings look to keep their own

For those of you expecting the Detroit Red Wings to create some fireworks over this Fourth of July holiday, prepare to be underwhelmed. With Vincent Lecavalier headed to Philadelphia, David Clarkson demanding the moon and stars, and injury concerns about Nathan Horton, the Wings have refocused on their own unrestricted free agents, acquiring a second-line center, and perhaps extending...

Valtteri Filppula Nabs 5-Year, $25 Million Deal by Tampa Bay Lightning

It was all but a given that Valtteri Filppula had played his last game with the Detroit Red Wings, and now that’s official. Filppula signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning (and GM Steve Yzerman), multiple outlets reported. The Red Wings had tried to get Filppula locked into a contract extension prior to this past season, then continued to chat with...

Honest Question

Are you happy with today? I was, but then a moment of reflecting upon our acquisitions and non-acquisitions made me see the light. We lost Damien Brunner and Valtteri Filppula to free agency. We gained Stephen Weiss-not-VVeiss and Daniel Alfredsson. So what? If we remove context, and someone says to me, seemingly out of the blue on any other day, that the Detroit Red Wings will...

Report: Red Wings appear to be the front runners for Daniel Alfredsson

Thursday, 40-year old forward Daniel Alredsson narrowed his list of potential teams down to three, the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings. Initially it was being reported that the longtime Ottawa Senator wouldn’t make his decision until free agency began today and early reports out of Ottawa are indicating that things aren’t looking good for an Ottawa return...

Making the rumored deal I posted earlier official. The Detroit Red Wings sign former Ottawa Senators captain, Daniel Alfredsson to a one year deal worth 3.5M. Daniel Alfredsson To Sign With The Detroit Red Wings by   Randall Ritchey

Unrestricted free agency doesn’t start for another hour, but news has already come out that the Ottawa Senators long time captain, Daniel Alfredsson will not be returning to the Sens this season.
