Terrace’s Ryan Shannon (23) blocks Snohomish star guard, Luke Hamlin (12)

in the Mountlake Terrace Holiday Tournament Championship.

Unlike the first short week for the holidays, this was a very exciting one, as it featured the Mountlake Terrace Holiday Tournament. It started with Mountlake Terrace defeating star big man, Ryan Shannon’s old team, Marysville-Pilchuck, 84-50. Then Snohomish beat Mark-Morris 55-51 to set up the dream match-up of two of the top teams in the state for the finals (more on that later).

Also happening this week, Meadowdale pulled out a close win over Stanwood, 49-48 to bring their record back to .500 (6-6). Meadowdale opened the year with one of the worst starts in recent history, starting 0-3. With the loss, Stanwood’s record dropped to 5-5 after starting the year 4-2.

See my player of the week and my WesCo Power Rankings after the jump!

Player of the Week: Michael Washington Jr., Oak Harbor (Senior)

Washington won “Player of the Week” honors earlier this year for his 41 point performance against Everett. This time was far different. He didn’t overpower any team with his scoring, except for seemingly his own. In 3 straight losses against Monroe, Juanita, and Renton he put up 15, 19, and 18 points. That’s hard to do when your team is consistently losing 3 days in a row. Also, when he put up 19 against Juanita, his team only scored 13 points to back him up. That’s right, he outscored the rest of his whole team.
Runners Up: Zach Pederson, Josh Hawkinson

Power Rankings:

1. Mountlake Terrace (10-0) It’s not just the offense on this team (they beat Snohomish by 22, the 8th team they’ve beaten by at least 20 points), but the defense. The Hawks held Luke Hamlin, the top scorer in the state, to just 10 points, his lowest total of the season. If you don’t agree with Terrace being No. 1, check this out.
This Week: Meadowdale (6-6), Monroe (4-5)

2. Snohomish (9-1) So...what went wrong for the Panthers? When you look at the game closely, not much really. They were just simply outplayed. It kind of comes down to the style of play of the two teams also. Over the year, the Hawks have averaged 65.8 points per game, while the Panthers have averaged 61.3 points per game. The Hawks have also allowed nearly 200 less points over the season, displaying their talent in defense. Don’t give up on the Panthers yet though.
This Week: Jackson (7-3)

3. Jackson (7-3) Go ahead. Hate me for it. Maybe I’m overrating them, or maybe I just believe in this team that has gone 7-1 for the past 25 days. If you want to know how good this team really is, see their upcoming game against Snohomish this week.
This Week: Snohomish (9-1), Stanwood (5-5)

4. Shorewood (9-2) I just can’t find a reason to rank this team higher. The only notable win I can find all year has been against Glacier Peak, a team that hasn’t done much  this year. Shorewood gets a light week against Meadowdale.
This Week: Meadowdale (6-6)

5. Lake Stevens (7-3) I had a hard time putting Lake Stevens in the top five, after taking two hard losses this week against Ingraham, 56-59, and Woodinville, 54-52. But until then, Lake Stevens had been nearly flawless, as they had only lost to Snohomish. It’s up to Kevin Smith and Devin Stoen to bring this team to the top of WesCo North.
This Week: Edmonds-Woodway (8-2), Kamiak (6-4)

6. Edmonds-Woodway (8-2)
This Week: Lake Stevens (7-3), Monroe (4-5)

7. Meadowdale (6-6)
This Week: Shorewood (9-2), Mountlake Terrace (10-0)

8. Kamiak (6-4)
This Week: Arlington (5-5), Lake Stevens (7-3)

9. Glacier Peak (6-4)
This Week: Oak Harbor (3-7), Stanwood (5-5)

10, Shorecrest (6-4)
This Week: Everett (0-8)
