The Florida Panthers opened their 2012-13 season by celebrating raising their new Southeast Division championship banner and beating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1. Panthers fans like myself were hoping they could ride this momentum to overcome injuries and tread water until reinforcements arrive. The exact opposite has occurred as the Panthers have been outscored by 18 goals on a 5 game losing streak and are now 1-5. The Panthers have only scored 5 goals in this 5 game losing streak and easily has the worst goal differential in the NHL. How has this happened? Let’s break it down: 1. Regression to the mean – The Panthers vastly outplayed their goal differential in 2011-12, mainly through 18 “loser” points. It was only a matter of time for this to catch up to them. 2. Injuries – I know injuries are not supposed to be an excuse but the Panthers have not had their top forward line together for a game yet this season.
