What’s going on with Valeri Nichushkin? Will the NHL forward return to Avs lineup anytime soon?

In a breathtaking development on Sunday, Valeri Nichuskin shocked the NHL world when news broke out about his sudden absence from the Colorado Avalanche’s lineup. The Russian forward’ unavailability raised several concerns among fans.

The forward was perfectly fit for the game and was not dealing with injuries. His uncertain absence provoked NHL Insider Adrian Dater to share an uncomfortable message with the fans.

As per Dater, the 28-year-old star was leaving the team mid-season and entering the NHL’s Player Assistance Program. This news later became official as the team took to their X account to share the details about him.

This is now the second time in the last eight months that Nichushkin has decided to enter the NHLPA. His name caught the attention of the world in May 2023, when reports of him being involved in a hotel room scandal emerged. This took place when the Avs faced off the Seattle Kraken during the Stanley Cup playoff rounds.

After his unexpected leave from the team, fans started to got worried about the condition of Valeri Nichushkin. The Russian international has now released a statement regarding this daring step from him.

In his message, Nichushkin would thank his wife, family, fans, friends, and the Avs organization for their continued support.

I have made the decision to seek help and enter the Players Assistance Program. My goal is to address my issues and prevent any negative outcomes once and for all. I want to thank my wife and family, my friends, the Avalanche organization, and all of our fans for their understanding and support. Valeri Nichushkin about his absence in his statement.

Though the trio of Nathan McKinnon, Cale Maker, and Devon Towers continue to earn praises for their outstanding performances, the strong showing of their Russian forward cannot be looked away.

This season, Nichushkin has once again shown off his versatility while contributing 42 points (22 goals and 20 assists). How the team now performs without him will be interesting to see.

Speaking of the Avs, the 2021-22 Stanley Cup winners have once again looked in top form. They are currently second in the Central Division, one point behind the Winnipeg Jets. They would be hoping to bounce back from a defeat against the Montreal Canadiens when they face the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.
