The What's Next series is part of an ongoing look from the Pens Initiative staff taking a look at the Penguins UFAs, RFAs, and most polarizing personalities heading into the next season.  We look at the year that was and the year coming and wonder: What's Next.I have written a lot about Tyler Kennedy for this website, on Twitter, and on Facebook.  I have been a long-time defender of TK and sometimes have felt like I was the only one out there.  Well that's not exactly true, because during the Pens regular season the only bigger TK fan than me was the one who mattered:  Dan Bylsma.  Despite a regular season where he struggled mightily at times, and despite the fact that fans and talking heads alike were calling for Bylsma to scratch Kennedy, TK played in 46 of the Pens 48 games, and the only two he missed were due to illness.Bylsma used TK everywhere:  on the 2nd line with Malkin and Neal, on the 3rd line with Cooke and Sutter, on the 4th line, hell even on the first line...

Update: Pens ink Bylsma to two-year extension

Bylsma would vault to #1 on my list if he becomes available. Update: The Penguins have extended coach Dan Bylsma, so he is now eliminated from the head coaching pool. Original Post: The Penguins were swept out of the playoffs last night, scoring just two goals against a red-hot Tuukka Rask in those four games. The Penguins were completely outmatched, despite winning the Stanley Cup...

John Toperzer: To Bylsma or not to Bylsma, that is the poll question

poll by twiigs.com Penguin thoughts heading into the offseason @JohnToperzer -- The argument of who could possibly replace Dan Bylsma as coach doesn’t hold much water with me. Who was Dan Bylsma when HE became head coach of the Penguins? Nothing more than an unknown quantity. Sometimes the fear of the unknown keeps folks from taking chances in life and that holds...

GARTH: What About Bylsma?

Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero and Penguins ownership have not decided yet what will become of head coach Dan Bylsma, who has one year remaining in his current contract. The heavily-favored Penguins were embarrassingly swept out of the playoffs in four games by the less talented, more physical, more systematically-correct Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Finals Bylsma was hi...

Bylsma: Fleury to regain job next season

As the Pittsburgh Penguins embark on an offseason that figures to include significant changes, coach Dan Bylsma insists the goalie position won't be one of them. Bylsma called Marc-Andre Fleury ''a franchise goalie . . . this franchise's goalie'' on Sunday, one month to the day after Tomas Vokoun made his Penguins postseason debut in place of Fleury as Pittsburgh...

Penguins extend coach Dan Bylsma

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero announced Wednesday that head coach Dan Bylsma had signed a two-year contract extension through the 2015-16 season. The Penguins also extended the contracts of assistant coaches Tony Granato and Todd Reirden.

Keep Calm and Shero On. Why the Bylsma extension makes unlimited sense.

Look, it was sink or swim. The Pens were going to either fire Dan Bylsma,or extend him.  They extended him, and it makes unlimited sense. Stability Think back to the end of the Craig Patrick era. There was no system, coaches were in and out, and basically the Penguins were like a college kid who kept overdrafting their bank account. In the Eastern Conference Finals in...

Bylsma's bizarre remarks about Tomas Vokoun

Everyone, whether it's us, you, or a veteran journalist, can be made to look like a fool when it comes to predicting a playoff series or how a certain player will perform. We've learned this the hard way recently when the Pens' season and Stanley Cup hopes were annihilated within a calendar week. But you know one thing everyone can agree on? Tomas Vokoun took away...

Starkey:  Lemieux, Burkle Endorse Status Quo

From Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.  Starkey lists the majority of bullets for those not agreeing with a contract extension for Penguins Head Coach Dan Bylsma. Instead, they essentially told the world — via Shero — that they are accepting of the hideous playoff implosions that have marked the past four springs. The Montreal meltdown.  The Tampa Bay...
