Chris Osgood has retired after a 17 year career in the NHL, most of which was spent with the Detroit Red Wings. He was a third round pick, 54th overall, by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1991 NHL entry draft. Before we debate if he deserves a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame, let us look at where he stands in terms of all time great Detroit Red Wings.
The first number that sticks out for me is he won three cups with this team. A lot of hard core hockey fans will give more credit to the great Wings defense, in the Osgood era of the team, but winning three cups is not something anyone can do.
On the all time Wings records, he ranks second in wins (312) to Terry Sawchuck, and has played 554 games as a Wings net minder. Overall, he played in 744 games. For HOF purposes that is 18th on the all time NHL list.
