Detroit Red Wings interested in Jay Bouwmeester

Is Jay Bouwmeester Michigan-bound? According to the Calgary Herald, word has it the Detroit Red Wings have made a pitch for the Calgary Flames defenseman. Losing both Nicklas Lidstrom and Brad Stuart this offseason, the Red Wings have a gaping hole on the blue line and few decent free-agent options. GM Ken Holland has an excess of solid forwards to offer the Flames in exchange...

Red Wings overnight report: Danny Cleary and Jan Mursak, reclamation projects

Between this Saturday’s charity baseball game held by Red Wings Alumni Association president Joey Kocur, the Plymouth Whalers’ alumni game that’s also benefiting Gleaners on Saturday, a trio of Swedish charity hockey games first involving Niklas Kronwall Jonathan Ericsson and Gustav Nyquist, and then Henrik Zetterberg and a smorgasbord of NHL stars, and the simple fact that...

Time for 55 to Drive

So what are we looking at right now in terms of defense heading into this next season?Kronwall-WhiteQuincey-EricssonSmith-KindlQuestion marks?  Sure.  But there are worse top 6 in the league...despite all of the complaining in the Red Wings' universe.  Remember Brett Lebda?  Remember Derek Meech?  Kyle Quincey had a mediocre (at best) end to the season...that doesn't...

Red Wings add 4 from 'Russian 5' to alumni day

Four players from Detroit's ''Russian Five'' will be on hand when Red Wings alumni take on alumni from the Toronto Maple Leafs the day before the Winter Classic. Viacheslav Fetisov, Igor Larionov, Vladimir Konstantinov and Sergei Fedorov will participate in the festivities Dec. 31 at Comerica Park in Detroit. The next day, the current Red Wings and Maple Leafs...

A Trade Proposal For You

Once again it’s Paul and this time I have a question for you. A Detroit fan at HFBoards proposed the following trade: Valtteri Filppula, Gustav Nyquist, Jakub Kindl and a 2nd round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft for Ryan Kesler. Both Kindl ($833K) and Nyquist ($875K) will be RFAs after this season and Filppula ($3M) will have UFA status on July 1st, 2013.  Kesler ($5M) is signed...

Red Wings overnight report: context, Kronwall, promotions, Tootoo talk and CBA fun

Regardless of whether I’ve had to miss chunks of time due to health issues or more pleasant distractions like the vacation that’s two days from its conclusion on a windswept morning in Grand Marais, I’ve found that the most difficult aspect of choosing to step away from the computer—or anywhere with a cell phone tower, as Wednesday’s trip to the Hurricane River campground...

Red Wings overnight report: there ain’t no easy way ‘home’ for Sergei Fedorov

I didn’t need Jeff Riger or any of you to remind Red Wings fans that Sergei Fedorov remains an incredibly controversial player. On my second-to-last night in Grand Marais, I mentioned his inclusion in the Winter Classic Alumni Showdown, and one uncle talked about Fedorov as instrumental to the three Cups that the Wings won with a player “who could dominate like Bobby Orr,”...

Here’s what a shirt sees after being shot out of a t-shirt cannon (video)

Oh, so that’s what it looks like. Then my dreams were accurate. According to the YouTube description from the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, the mad scientists behind this experiment “wrapped a GoPro camera in a t-shirt and sent it flying out of the world famous Griff Gatling Gun.” [...]

This is what it looks like to be shot out of a t-shirt cannon in a sports arena

The Grand Rapids Griffins are the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, and they just released a Go Pro video of what it looks like to be shot out of a t-shirt cannon in Van Andel Arena (where they play their home games).Basically, it looks like a dizzy ass time:Get the latest Thigh updates by following us on Facebook & Twitter.a2a_linkname=document.title;a2a_linkurl=location.href;

The Reunited Russian Five

I know this is a day or two old, but it deserves a mention, because it is that damn cool.  For the Winter Classic alumni game, Detroit has managed to convince 4 of the 5 members of the original (OG for the kids) Russian Five to play.    The Red Wings announced this afternoon that Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov and Vladimir Konstantinov will take part in the festivities...

Subban unhappy with Canadiens' contract offers

Negotiations between the Canadiens and defenseman P.K. Subban have hit a roadblock. Subban, the last remaining unsigned restricted free agent, has made it clear that he won't entertain an offer sheet from another team, but he and his agent, Don Meehan, haven't been happy with the Canadiens' offers to date. The Canadiens have reportedly offered Subban a two-year deal...

Should Subban Take The Offer?

via TSN, The Montreal Canadiens and defenceman PK Subban are still in negotiations over a new contract, as RDS reports that the team has offered him a two-year deal worth $5.5 million. RDS adds that Subban’s camp is looking for a longer term. Subban made $875,000 last season, his third in the pros as part of his entry-level deal. He had seven goals and 29 assists in 81 games.

Travis Yost: Shootin' the Breeze: On P.K. Subban and Value Over Replacement Players

I've been driving across the country the past few days. Perhaps that's one commonality the United States and Canada share -- the drive is endlessly long and universally sucks. A few thoughts have crossed my mind over the past handful of hours, but none individually large enough to merit its own blog post. I've compiled them below. --- First thing first: What the...

Montreal and The Contract Conundrum: P.K. Subban

Photo courtesy of Dave Sandford / Getty Images  By James Stephan (@J_Habs) Fan favorite  and Restricted Free Agent P.K. Subban is on the hunt for a new contract from the Montreal Canadiens. And many fans are clamoring at the thought of P.K. being given an offer sheet much like former Edmonton Oiler, and Anaheim Duck, Dustin Penner. While an offer sheet would cause wide spread...
