Phoenix Coyotes forward Ray Whitney collected his 600th career assist tonight against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI.

 

Whitney becomes only the 75th player in NHL history to reach 600 career regular season assists and the sixth-active player to do so joining Jaromir Jagr (966), Nicklas Lidstrom (868), Teemu Selanne (721), Joe Thornton (711) and Daniel Alfredsson (642).

 

The 5-foot-10, 180 pound Whitney has appeared in all 28 games for the Coyotes this season. He is tied for the team scoring lead (10-14-24) and is tied for the team lead in assists (14). Whitney recorded his fifth three-point game with Phoenix (1-2-3) on Nov. 29 at Chicago.

 

Last season, the 39-year-old native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta appeared in 75 games with the Coyotes (his first season in Phoenix), recording 17-40-57. He posted his sixth-consecutive season with at least 50 points and sixth season with at least 40 assists. On Nov. 13, 2001, he tied his career high for points in a game 3-2-5 versus the St. Louis Blues.

 

Whitney was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the second round (23rd overall) in the 1991 Entry Draft.
