The NHL season is in full swing as it passes its midway point, and once again the stars of hockey have shown their skills time and again. Night in and night out, the likes of Claude Giroux and Henrik Lundqvist battle it out, leaving it all out on the ice. While there's still a lot of hockey to be played, with the All-Star game looming next week, it feels like an appropriate time to glance around the league to take stock of who's been playing the best and deserves some credit as the NHL's midseason MVP. The aforementioned Giroux has...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 1/16/12

There is no doubt that Claude Giroux and Jaromir Jagr have been struggling of late, but there is no reason to be overly concerned about either player. It's just a midseason slump. In particular, I don't think Giroux is still suffering any ill-effects from his concussion in December. Be's simply not playing very well lately and has been pressing the last few games....

After Henrik Lundqvist and his teammates bounced back from a modest slump by shutting out the Nashville Predators, New York Rangers owner James Dolan decided to say what's been on his mind for a while: his club is Stanley Cup title material. Rangers/Predators In Review

This, as expected, was a relatively boring game. The Predators ran their 1-2-2/1-4 trap to perfection, but the Rangers were able to adjust to a dump and chase and generate some goals off board play. In the end, it was a grind it out game that had the Rangers emerge victorious, with another shutout for Henrik Lundqvist. This was a very important win for the Rangers who had lost two...

The First Place Team

There is no clear leader in the NHL standings at this point in the season.  Two teams have 60 points each to tie for the lead.  Given that the New York Rangers have 43 games played and Chicago has 46 games played in that tie, the Rangers are first overall in the league. The New York Rangers were not considered a serious candidate to be first overall in the NHL.  After all last...
