McDonagh, Staal, Girardi, and Del Zotto collectively make up arguably the best top-four defensemen that any team in the NHL has to work with. Anton Stralman, who filed for salary arbitration, is likely to return to the team and find his home on the third pairing. But one spot on the blue-line is still available and there is, at this time, a lot of uncertainty as to who willl fill the spot. So let's look at some potential options.
Stu Bickel- The incumbent, of sorts. Bickel was in the lineup for most of the postseason. Stuuuuu averaged an underwhelming 5:10 of icetime during the playoffs and famously sat on the bench for almost all of a triple overtime victory against the Capitals. It's pretty safe to say that John Tortorella does not have much faith in Bickel. Injuries are what forced Bickel into the lineup during the regular season. And although he lasted longer than many (including Bickel himself) probably anticipated Torts will surely want someone he can depend on to p...
BEST OF MAXIM
For years I couldn’t stand Glen Sather. The man steadfastly refused to stop star chasing and as a result the Rangers failed to make any progress, stuck as a perennial borderline playoff team and incapable of putting together a true contender.
Sather learned his lesson and now just as stubbornly refuses to abandon his plan of sticking with youth by including prized youngsters...
One year into a massive nine-year contract is a pretty small sample size to determine if the signing of Brad Richards was a win or loss for the New York Rangers.
Though Richards’ production (25 goals, 41 assists) was a bit disappointing from a numbers standpoint, he still had a massive impact on the Blueshirts this season. It’s too early to make any concrete judgments on his...
The Rangers have needs this summer — one specific need, really. They need scoring. It was a struggle at times for the Rangers to score during the playoffs, and you can’t count on Henrik Lundqvist to shut out the other team every game. He is human, after all. But so far the Rangers haven’t signed [...]
In another depth move designed to strengthen the Connecticut Whale, the Rangers have signed RW Brandon Segal. Terms of the deal are still undisclosed, but Segal is likely going to be an insurance policy for the CT Whale, as the 29 year old winger has just 102 NHL games under his belt (11-11-22).
The 6’2″, 209 lb RW plays consistent minutes in the AHL, but has never found the...
Newly signed Taylor Pyatt has been on a few teams that made deep runs in the playoffs, and while he does admit that the Rangers were able to offer a more secure contract than the Coyotes, stuck in ownership limbo, were able to, it's clear that the state of the Rangers' organization also played a tremendous factor. As he told The Chronicle Journal, this might be his chance...
The other day Adam Herman reported on the blog that Chris Kreider was going to participate in The Big Assist IV charity hockey game last night. Now, Julie Robenhymer over at HockeyBuzz reminds us why Kreider is such a special person on and off the ice by giving this great account from the game..."After the game, the players posed for a team picture and then headed towards the...
Career AHL veteran Brandon Segal, who has appeared in over 500 games in the American Hockey League, has signed a new deal with the New York Rangers. A journeyman who has played for six AHL teams and three NHL teams, Segal was most recently a part of the Lightning organization, his second stint in Tampa [...]
It really has been a quite summer for the New York Rangers this off-season. Sure, they have made some news but certainly not the big splashes we are used to seeing the team make during the free agency season.
Yesterday, the Blueshirts made another small move in signing forward Jeff Halpern to a 1-year deal worth $700k. Definitely cannot complain about the terms or the money being...

Hank's huge year continues tonight as he's been nominated for an ESPY for "Best NHL Player". Tune in to ESPN at 9 p.m. eastern to see if he wins!
Along with inking Jeff Halpren to a contract last night, the New York Rangers have also signed defenseman Logan Pyett to a one-year, $600k deal. Pyett, 24, spent the last four season with the Grand Rapids Griffns of the AHL (Detroit's minor leage affiliate). Of note, Pyett was the last selection (212th overall) of the 2006 NHL draft. Here is what Griffins Central has to say about...
Just after 9:30 AM this morning, the New York Post's Larry Brooks reported two-time Washington Capital Jeff Halpern has signed a one-year deal with the New York Rangers for $700,000. Halpern, 36, played in 69 games last season with the Caps before being scratched in favor of Jay Beagle in the NHL Playoffs. Halpern scored 4 goals and 12 assists during the 2011-12 season...
Amidst all the hubbub over the Jeff Halpern signing and Rick Nash trade rumors, the Rangers made another depth move this morning, adding 24-year-old defenseman Logan Pyett to the mix.
CapGeek broke the news of the one-year, two-way contract and lists Pyett’s NHL cap hit as $600k and AHL salary as $100k. Pyett was originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round...
It's a slow day in NYR news, and NHL news overall, and I've gotten into a debate with several Rangers fans on Twitter over what a team should/would be willing to part with in a trade to improve itself.Obviously, you want to trade from an area of strength to improve the team's weakness i.e sacrificing an abundance of defense for some scoring. It's the lay of the land...
