After their ambitious offer sheet to restricted free agent forward Ryan O'Reilly was immediately matched by the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, perhaps the Calgary Flames will finally forget about trying to win now and accept that the time has come to rebuild.  Going after O'Reilly "really didn't make a whole lot of sense and smacked off desperation," according to the Toronto Star's Damien Cox, who suggests that maybe the Flames will now bite the bullet and acquire some young talent in return for franchise icon Jarome Iginla before the trade deadline.  On the other hand, if recent decisions are any indicator, maybe not.  "It's really amazing how dumb the Flames have become," Cox writes. "The fact Calgary was willing to give up its first rounder to get O'Reilly suggests that pick is now in play as the Flames continue to fool themselves that the future is now."

Iginla lifts Flames past Canucks

Jarome Iginla continued to have a hot hand, scoring the winning goal at 12:36 of the third period to lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night. Iginla has five goals in the past four games after scoring just once in his first 16 games of the season. Mike Cammalleri added a pair of goals for the Flames, who snapped a two-game losing streak...

Flames defend O'Reilly offer sheet

Calgary Flames general manager Jay Feaster says the team performed due diligence before signing Colorado forward Ryan O'Reilly to an offer sheet. The Flames released a statement Friday after Rogers Sportsnet in Canada reported that O'Reilly would have been placed on waivers if the Avalanche hadn't matched Calgary's offer sheet. Had the deal played out that way,...

Should Someone Lose Their Job In Calgary?

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun, The Calgary Flames are used to getting nothing for their first- and third-round draft picks. But to skip the formality of the draft altogether and simply gift your picks to someone else who may actually benefit from them seems unusually charitable, doesn’t it? Surely, any organization that frittered away such assets to a rival...

Do The Flames Have A Plan?

from Damien Cox of Ths Spin at the Toronto Star, It's really amazing how dumb the Calgary Flames have become. A lack of strategic thinking has the Flames in a terrible spot with a disappointing record, still trying to deny all the strong evidence that they need to take a giant step back and rebuild, hanging on to veteran players beyond their due date in some faint hope...

Calgary Flames sign free agent Ryan O?Reilly to offer sheet, Colorado matches it

The Calgary Flames tried to improve their roster on Feb. 28 by signing restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly of the Colorado Avalanche to an offer sheet. O’Reilly was in a contract dispute with the Avalanche and the Flames decided to offer him a two-year deal worth a total of $10 million just before the two teams faced each other on the ice. The young center signed the offer...

Canucks-Flames Preview

The Calgary Flames just failed to sign a top-line center, though it turns out they may have avoided a catastrophe. The Flames will try to rebound from a pair of road losses Sunday night when they host the Northwest Division-leading Vancouver Canucks. Calgary (7-8-4) signed restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly - Colorado's leading scorer last season - to an offer sheet on...

Canucks vs Calgary Flames: Burn it with fire!

Burn After Watching With the horrible weather in Calgary holding the Canucks in Vancouver Sunday morning, you began to wonder what to expect when the puck dropped at the Saddledome. The travel wasn’t long, but hockey players have routines and disruptions to that routine during a home and away back-to-back can cause the type of flux that leads to what we saw last night. While Calgary...

Colin Dambrauskas: Calgary Flames Take On the Vancouver Canucks

Follow me on Twitter: @ColinDJD After an interesting couple of days, the Calgary Flames will try to regroup as they take on the Vancouver Canucks at the Saddledome. Vancouver, who sits 8 points ahead of Calgary, is 8th overall and 1st in the Northwest, so tonight’s game will be no easy feat for the Flames. We’ve faced off against the Canucks twice this season and...

Colin Dambrauskas: Flames Lose to Colorado Twice In One Night....Or Did They?

Follow me on Twitter: @ColinDJD The Calgary Flames were defeated not just once last night by the Colorado Avalanche, but twice. Not only did they manage to lose 5-4 to the Avs after a comfortable three goal lead, they also were ousted in terms of their offer sheet to Ryan O’Reilly, which Colorado matched within hours it being submitted. But did they actually lose out...
