Welcome to a weekly column by Kyle Bauer on various happenings in national and local sports.  Agree or disagree with the author? Please comment below or let him know your thoughts by email, kylebauerdsn@gmail.com or twitter, @kyle_bauer   It has been reported since January, but with popular hockey rumor blog Kukla's Korner picking up the story a couple days ago, it has caught fire; Pavel Datsyuk will retire following next season. Fans have been in denial, shock, and some, like myself, have been preparing for this the past couple seasons. It's not that I'm arrogant enough to consider myself clairvoyant, it's that the departure of Datsyuk seems logical on several levels. I think the first and most obvious reason he'll retire is his age. People forget Datsyuk was drafted in 1998 and made his debut at age 22 in 2001. Despite his immense skill, he was considered an undersized project, not an instant post-draft call-up. I suppose I can see how most fans cou...

Video blog: Datsyuk bidding farewell to Wings?

Detroit Red Wings fans were buzzing about the rumor of Pavel Datsyuk possibly bidding farewell to play in Russia.

Datsyuk scores in EA’s NHL 94…Sort of…

This video comes to you through multiple hands...I stumbled upon it via RedWingsFeed, and Sportsline's Brian Stubits saw it via a Tweet from NHL.com's Dave Lozo, but it's worth the effort. NHL.com took Pavel Datsyuk's end-to-end goal against Nashville and de-pixelated it, added some sound effects and turned it into a clip reminiscent of most over-30 hockey fans'...

Ken Holland discusses the Red Wings’ plans in a Wings-centric Hockey World

The Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson dedicated the bulk of his "Hockey World" column and blog entries to the Red Wings this week, engaging in a fascinating interview with Wings GM Ken Holland about the possibility that Detroit might not make the playoffs for the 22nd straight season, and they talk about the Wings' unrestricted free agents-to-be, too. Matheson believes...

Red Wings will bring prospect Calle Jarnkrok to Detroit to visit, not play

Red Wings prospect Calle Jarnkrok's Swedish team, Brynas IF, won't repeat as Swedish Eliteserien champions. They were ingloriously swept from the playoffs by Skelleftea AIK on Monday, leaving Jarnkrok's future up in the air. The Wings signed him a year ago, but chose to loan him to Brynas for the Eliteserien season, and the Swedish-language newspapers have assumed that...

Darren Helm suffers setback, playing Wednesday now a ‘pipe dream’

Just when you thought the Wings could be overcoming the injury bug that’s plagued them all season… another setback. While preparing for his anticipated return Wednesday, Red Wings forward Darren Helm lasted less than 10 minutes on the ice when his back once again became an issue. This is according to the Detroit Free Press. “Yeah, I think we’re dealing with a little minor...

Good news from Khan regarding Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves

The injury fairy made an appearance at the Red Wings' Tuesday morning practice, but MLive's Ansar Khan reports that Patrick Eaves escaped a serious injury after taking a puck to his jaw: Patrick Eaves does not have a fractured jaw. It's just sore and he's day to day, Ken Holland said. — Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) March 19, 2013 "Day to day...

Red Wings overnight report: broken players and a prospect in the pipleine?

My technological odyssey continued on Monday afternoon, so I took a little time to attend to something I'll need to write a short story about one day... And the Red Wings and their fans received bad news, bad news and more bad news in the injury department. In theory, we all assumed, Kyle Quincey had only suffered a chipped cheekbone, and could be back within a week or two...

Red Wings Sunday evening news: due praise for the team, Datsyuk, Emmerton and Jensen

The Red Wings received Sunday off after wrapping up their three-games-in-four nights trip through Western Canada with an overtime win over Edmonton and a big win over Vancouver, and the team will get some time to rest their bumps and bruises as they won't play again until they host the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. Before spending all night flying back to Detroit, MLive'...

Red Wings-Wild game-day updates: Eaves out, Nyquist recalled for ‘Rivalry Night’ game vs. Wild

The Detroit Red Wings face off against a difficult opponent in the Minnesota Wild tonight (7:30 PM EDT, NBC Sports Network/TSN2/97.1 FM), and it sounds like they won't have Patrick Eaves (sore but not broken jaw) in the lineup: Patrick Eaves (sore jaw) not skating this morning. All other healthy players on ice for Wings. If Eaves can't play they must recall someone...

All Chuck Fletcher

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com, A lot of general managers will say they look at the Detroit Red Wings as the model for consistency as a franchise. As a younger GM with experience working in the League for several teams, does that play with you as well and do you want to model your team after the Red Wings? "I think so, but it's a pretty tough path to duplicate their...

Fredo’s Back Soon, And This Time For Good

How long before we see this?  "Getting Carlo back is just like kicking some tires at the deadline and coming away with a special player, a special man, really. I like our team." Ken Holland's big offseason splash is on the verge of returning, essentially guaranteeing the Wings one period of excellence before he gets hurt again. Defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo also...

GDT - Game 30: Red Wings (14-10-5) host Wild (16-10-2) 7:30

The Western Conference standings are tighter than Adrian Dantley's wallet.  The Wings 33 pts have them holding onto the 7th spot at the moment, 3 pts out of 4th place, and only 3 pts in front of 10th place CBJ.  Jobu was apparently in charge of Tuesday's practice;  Eaves is questionable after being hit in the mellon by a puck, Datsyuk has the flu, and Hank has the runs...

The final CCHA playoff tournament takes place at the Joe this weekend
