Less than a week into the season, the Detroit Red Wings have already felt the effects from the retirements of two of the franchise's most successful players. Thin on defensemen and scoreless on the power play, the Red Wings look to bounce back from their latest defeat by trying to continue their home success against the Minnesota Wild on Friday night. Tomas Holmstrom played all 15 of his NHL seasons in Detroit, and along with seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom was a staple on the Red Wings' power-play unit. Lidstrom often helped set up Holmstrom, who positioned himself in front of the net to score 141 of his 289 career goals - including the playoffs - on the man advantage. All but one of Holmstrom's 11 goals last season came on the power-play. Without the two retired stars, Detroit (1-2-0) is to 0 for 15 on the power play after failing on four chances in Tuesday's 2-1 home-opening defeat to Dallas. "I thought the power play was terrible," coach Mike Babcock told the NHL's official website. "We pass it around and pass it around and pass it around. If you don't shoot it and get it back and crash the net. When we had Nick and Homer, one got in front of the net and one shot the puck every time." Johan Franzen scored 11 of his team-leading 29 goals on the power play in 2011-12, but is still searching for his first goal overall. The Red Wings recorded 40 shots but didn't score until there were 3.4 seconds left Tuesday. Outscored 11-5 this season, Detroit also misses Lidstrom's presence within a defensive corps that's been plagued by injuries. Already without Carlo Colaiacovo for approximately a month with a shoulder injury, Ian White will miss at least two weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a deep leg laceration suffered Tuesday. The Red Wings hope Jonathan Ericsson (hip) can return from his two-game absence and Jakub Kindl (lower-body) will make his season debut Friday. Detroit has outscored Minnesota 48-22 during a 9-0-3 home stretch that dates to December 2006. Jimmy Howard has yielded 10 goals on 93 shots this season but is 4-0-2 with a 1.81 goals-against average at home versus Minnesota The Wild (2-1-0) seem like they're in position to take advantage of Detroit's makeshift defensive lineup in their first road contest, but offense has been hard to come by despite solid starts from Dany Heatley and Zach Parise. Minnesota recorded a league-low 177 goals last season and has been held to a goal apiece in its last two games after opening with a 4-2 win. Heatley scored his third on Parise's third assist in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Nashville. The Wild recorded 12 of their 30 shots in the first period and went 0 for 3 on the power play for the second straight game after a 2-for-7 performance in the opener. "It's a matter of just executing and finishing the play," said Parise, who has one goal on 17 shots. "Collectively we need to bear down a little bit and put those in.'' Despite Heatley's hot start, he's been held to two goals with three assists in his last 11 regular season and playoff games versus Detroit.

Wings defense takes another hit

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Ian White is expected to miss two or three weeks following surgery to repair a severe cut just above his left knee. White, who plays the point on the power play, was injured during the third period of Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to Dallas when he was struck by the skate blade of Wings goalie Jimmy Howard. "He had surgery this morning," general...

Referee helmet camera video from Detroit Red Wings scrimmage with the Grand Rapids Griffins

On Tuesday January 15th, the Detroit Red Wings held a scrimmage with the Grand Rapids Griffins at Compuware Ice Arena in order to better prepare for the NHL regular season.  With a shortened season there wasn’t any time for preseason games, so the Red Wings decided to have an intersquad scrimmage with the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Each team was composed of half Red Wings and half...

Wild vs Red Wings Recap: 1.25.2013

This is the type of performance a lot of us expected from the Red Wings when the season started. Good offense, shaky defense, and timely stops by Howard. Early in the first I really thought this was going to be a blowout. Detroit went an entire 1:30 of a 5 on 3 without a shot. Meanwhile, the Wild were playing solid puck possession hockey and peppering Howard with shots. Howard...

Will Kindl Hear The Wake-Up Call?

from Chuck Pleiness of Red Wings Front, Kindl will be paired on the second power play unit with Brendan Smith. For Kindl it may be his last chance to make this team has a regular. “That’s another good thing about injures, other people get opportunities,” Babcock said. “If you grab hold of it you get to play a long, long time. Everybody comes in has nobody and...

Red Wings 5, Wild 3

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings let one two-goal lead slip away on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena, but they held on to a second two-goal advantage. The Wings' forwards provided all the offense, getting a pair of goals from Todd Bertuzzi and one each from Damien Brunner, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, as they skated past the Minnesota Wild, 5-3. Detroit's forwards...

Red Wings-Wild quick take: it wasn’t pretty, but it was good

The Detroit Red Wings played like two different teams--or was it three or four?--en route to a slightly sloppy but particularly satisfying 5-3 win over the Minnesota Wild on Friday. I'll write more about the game I described as, "Dating a fat girl who 'tries harder'" on Twitter in a minute, but I'd like to hear what you thought about what may or may not...

Wings' Holmstrom officially retires

Tomas Holmstrom has made his retirement official after 15 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Holmstrom's announcement Tuesday was no surprise, but the Red Wings held a news conference before their home opener to give the Swedish winger a chance to reflect on a career that included four Stanley Cups and over 1,000 regular-season games. Holmstrom, who turns 40 on Wednesday,...

Video blog: Wings need calming influence

It's not time to panic yet, but Somebody has to step up for the Red Wings, who look like a rag-tag group of players trying to find themselves.

GDT - Game 4:  Red Wings (1-2) host Wild (2-1)  7:30

Detroyet fans fear not, your Coach said:  "We're a team in flux right now. But, we're going to be better. We'll be just fine.''  Shockingly, the reasons for Babock's optimism escape me.   The Wings cannot score, 1.33 G/G (28) and cannot keep the puck out of their net 3.67 GA/G (26).  Special teams are a freaking disaster.  0-15 on the PP, which...

Holmstrom makes retirement official

DETROIT Former Detroit Red Wings Kris Draper and Chris Osgood were relaxing in the sauna one day several years ago when Tomas Holmstrom came up to talk. It was vintage Homer, the lovable Swede with the broken English. I cant seem to get out of (coach) Scotty Bowmans dog yard, Holmstrom told his two teammates. Sometimes he sits me, sometimes he doesnt play me. Im always in the...

Radon Thoughts regarding the state of the Wings

I've been out of the loop for a couple of days, first due to my illness flaring up on Monday night and then due to a familial issue, but it's been suggested that I offer my opinions on Wings-related issues a little more regularly, so here are a few "radon" thoughts... Now that Tomas Holmstrom's retired, I sure as hell hope that the Wings hire him to coach...
