ST. PAUL, Minn. In a move that had the Minnesota Wild locker room in shock, Minnesota traded longtime defenseman Nick Schultz to the Edmonton Oilers on Monday, getting former Bloomington Jefferson high school star Tom Gilbert back in the deal. The Wild traded Marek Zidlicky on Friday, beginning a series of potential deals. With Monday's trade deadline approaching, general manager Chuck Fletcher then traded Schultz, the longest tenured Minnesota pro sports athlete. Schultz, the Wild's second-round draft pick in the 2000 draft, is the team's all-time leader in games played and is seventh in team history with 102 assists. "It's basically all I know is being here and playing here and being a part of this team," Schultz said. "It's going to be tough. It's going to be an adjustment for myself and my family, but it's something we're going to have to deal with." Schultz practiced with the team on Monday and was told by Fletcher that he was traded after leaving the ice. The news then hit a stunned and quiet locker room. Schultz scored a power-play goal in Sunday's 4-3 win against the San Jose Sharks. It was Schultz's first goal since Jan. 2, 2011. He also had two assists and a minus-10 in 62 games this season for the Wild. "I really enjoyed working with Nick," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. "He's a great player and he's a tremendous person, a great professional. Edmonton is very happy. He's going to be a very good fit for them. For us, we believe we're getting back a guy who is, again, everything that we've heard is a real character guy and what we know of him is the way that he plays the game. He should be a really good fit for the Minnesota Wild." Gilbert is a puck-moving defenseman, who had three goals and 14 assists with Edmonton this season, while tallying a minus-4 rating. Schultz and Gilbert are each signed through the 2013-14 season. Schultz's annual cap hit is 3.5 million, while Gilbert has a cap hit of 4 million. Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
