On Saturday, James posted about the possibility of Darryl Williams reuniting with Alain Vigneault on the Rangers coaching staff. Today, the Rangers made it official by announcing Williams will replace the recently departed Dan Lacroix as the team’s assistant coach. Williams spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks. Prior to joining the Canucks, Williams served as the Associate Coach, Video Coordinator, and Strength and Conditioning Coach for the St. John’s Fog Devils of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 2005-06 – 2007-08. Here’s Pat Leonard at the Daily News on Williams’ expected responsibilities… “In New York, Williams will take over Lacroix’s responsibility of watching games from a bird’s eye view, typically from the press box, and returning to the locker room at intermissions to provide Vigneault and the rest of the staff with a different perspective. Williams will not take over the Rangers’ video responsibilities, however. That will continue to be the realm of video coach Jerry Dineen.” …and the Rangers have their new eye in the sky. So much for my unrealistic idea of Leetch joining the staff. With Vigneault already having a relationship with Williams the transition should be seamless. …after prematurely freaking out last season with what seemed to be the fatal hiring of Arniel, I’ve definitely learned to trust Vigneault hires. …i love that the AV will continue to have someone scouting the game from this perspective. There’s plenty of things a coaching staff can miss at ice level that are so obvious watching from the stands (ie beating trap, power play set-up, etc.).
