According to Brendan Savage of Mlive.com who cites a team source, the Detroit Red Wings are discussing a trade with the Calgary Flames that would send veteran defenseman Jay Boumeester to the Motor City. Boumeester has been the source of trade rumors for some time now after he became expendable when the Flames signed Dennis Wideman to a five-year, $26.25 million deal. Ideally Calgary would probably like to keep both defensemen since their current payroll of $66.6 million is still under the $70.2 million dollar cap however the ongoing CBA negotiations could lower the cap putting the Flames in the red. The Wings essentially became interested in a deal for Boumeester when a relatively thin market of blue liners surfaced after prized d-man Ryan Suter signed with the Minnesota Wild. This is also not mentioning the retirement of captain Nicklas Lidstrom and the departure of Brad Stuart via free agency which left the Wings with only six NHL ready defensemen (Nicklas Kronwall, Jakub Kindl, ...
