For the second time in three games this season the Red Wings needed extra time to down the Coyotes.
The scoring was started off early as red hot forward Dan Cleary netted a goal for the Wings who jumped out to the quick lead.
However, following two Phoenix tallies the Wings found themselves trailing 2-1 entering the third period. Team captain, and leading scorer amongst all NHL defenseman, Nicklas Lidstrom found the back of the net on a seed fired from the blue line early in the third to knot the game at 2’s.
As overtime started the Wings took early control firing shots on net, a delayed penalty gave Detroit a six on five man advantage as they maintained possession of the puck. That was all they would need as defenseman Ruslan Salei fired a beautiful pass in front of the net, which was finished off by assistant captain Henrik Zetterberg on the redirect.
The wings are now 2-1 against the Coyotes this season, needing overtime to gain both victories. They improve to 9-3-1 overall as Phoenix falls to 4-5-5 on the young season.
Next up is Edmonton, Thursday night at the Joe, with the puck dropping at 7:30.
