The sale of the Phoenix Coyotes has finally become complete, with Greg Jamison taking over full control from the National Hockey League after three years. It took longer than many had expected, but Jamison was finally able to secure the finances necessary to purchase the Coyotes from the league for $170 million. It is also good news for the team and the fans that the arena agreement with the city of Glendale should be resolved by the end of the month, ending any speculation that relocation is an option. Simply put, the Coyotes are not going anywhere. But now that we know that the team is staying in the desert, does that give us any indication as to what will happen with the Coyotes’ captain, Shane Doan? The free agent has set a few deadlines that have come and gone without him signing a contract. His latest self-imposed deadline to re-sign with Phoenix or accept an offer from one of his multiple suitors is set for September 15, which is the same day that the current NHL collective bargaining agreement is set to expire. Due to potential lower player salaries and a lower salary cap possible without a floor number, Doan knows it would behoove him to sign before the current deal expires. From the beginning, Doan has expressed his desire to remain with the Coyotes. But he also prefaced that with the fact that he would not sign any deal with Phoenix as long as their ownership situation remained unsettled. Now we will have to see if he really meant what he said. The ownership situation in Phoenix is settled. Jamison has purchased the Coyotes and they are staying right where they are for the foreseeable future. Will we be saying the same when it comes to Doan? Hopefully, we will know within the next nine days.
