Canes coach Kirk Muller had a long chat with defenseman Jay Harrison after today's practice at Raleigh Center Ice. It's decision time. Harrison has not played since the Nov. 23 game against the Montreal Canadiens, missing 10 games with a concussion. But he's been cleared to play, Muller said he had a good practice today and Harrison could play Sunday in the road game against the Florida Panthers. "We'll sit down as a staff and decide if he's ready to jump into the lineup," Muller said. If Harrison is ready, Muller said the Canes may dress seven defensemen for the Panthers. Then again, Muller said the Canes could stick with the same lineup that was used in the 4-3 win Thursday over the Vancouver Canucks. Or Harrison could go in and someone else on the back end be a healthy scratch. Harrison has two goals and seven assists and was giving the Canes steady, solid play on the back end before the injury. He played more than 29 minutes, a season high, against ...

Fight and grit breathe life into Canes

RALEIGH, N.C. -- At this point, all Carolina Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller can do is ask that his team play hard and aggressively every night, and in time good times will come. The Canes are seriously depleted right now with Jeff Skinner, Joni Pitkanen and Jay Harrison shelved with concussions. They are also in the midst of one of the worst streaks in franchise history, which includes...

Division leading Panthers to host Hurricanes

It was 2 12 weeks ago that Carolina lost at home to Florida in Kirk Muller's debut as coach. Though the results have not always shown it, Muller believes his new team has improved since he took over. The Hurricanes look to win consecutive games for the first time in almost a month when they visit the Southeast Division-leading Panthers on Sunday. Carolina (10-18-5) lost 3-1...

Defense pairings and zone exits

I was just as shocked as anyone to see that the Jamie McBain-Tim Gleason defense pairing was kept together in Thursday night's game against the Canucks because of how poorly those two played as a unit until then. While they had a respectable outing that game, I thought Kirk Muller would have decided to reunite Bryan Allen and Tim Gleason since they were going up against a strong...

Howard Berger: Leafs-Carolina Rumor; More on Crosby

BUFFALO (Dec. 16) - My old pal and radio colleague, Bill Watters, created some chatter this week when he suggested the Maple Leafs were interested in acquiring big centre Eric Staal from the Carolina Hurricanes, who pulled out of a 1-7-2 nosedive by upsetting Vancouver on Thursday night. By his own standards, Staal is having a terrible season (34-7-13-20 and a ghastly minus-18),...

Monday debate: trade 'untouchables'

Canes general manager Jim Rutherford continues to say he's looking at potential trades and has often mentioned dealing a defenseman for a forward. But should that be it? Or should more players be available and on the table when deals are being discussed? And which ones? Question: which players would you consider the "untouchables" in potential trades? The floor is open.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Vancouver Canucks 12/15/11 Scoring Chances

All season long, the one thing that's been frustrating Canes fans the most (myself included) is how some of the team's best prospects were being restricted to fourth line minutes but it appears that is about to change under Kirk Muller. With Jeff Skinner out, that leaves a huge hole to fill in the top-nine but it also creates an opportunity for one of the younger players...

Limited practice includes a 'first star'

The Canes had just 10 skaters on the ice, along with goalie Justin Peters, at a limited practice today at the RBC Center. Among the 10: forward Drayson Bowman, named the first star of the Canes' 4-3 win Thursday over the Vancouver Canucks. "I expected to go on the ice. It's good," Bowman said with a smile after the practice. "Just glad to be here and want to...

Hurricanes hold on to beat Canucks

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Carolina Hurricanes had not won a game this season when trailing or tied after two periods. But...
