With Mike Smith's short-term availability in doubt following a hard hit Thursday night by the Canucks' Alex Edler that resulted in a two-game suspension, the Coyotes on Saturday recalled goalie Chad Johnson from the team's AHL affiliate in Portland.
The 26-year-old Johnson made two starts for the Coyotes earlier this season, posting a 1-0-1 record with a 0.98 goals-against average and .952 save percentage. He earned his first career NHL shutout on Jan. 28 against Nashville by making 21 saves.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder also has appeared in 32 games with the Pirates in the AHL this season, posting a 16-13-1 record with a 2.87 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.
The Coyotes have not made any announcement regarding the status of Smith, who left the loss to the Canucks at the conclusion of the second period, about two minutes after the blindside hit.
