I mentioned this in passing while penning the overnight report because I thought it was amusing, but gauging by the retweets from RedWingsFeed and a story just posted by CBS Detroit, I’m guessing that the story merits its own entry: Former Red Wings goalie Dominik Hasek did indeed tell iSport.cz that he’s interested in playing in trying to make one more NHL comeback at 47 years of age, despite having spent the last year traveling the world after not securing a KHL contract. Here’s a terribly rough translation of the article in question: Continue reading "Yes, Dominik Hasek is indeed planning another comeback"

Red Wings overnight report: milking Hasek’s return story and a tough way for Jurco to go

The reaction to the news that Dominik Hasek is at least entertaining the idea of attempting an NHL comeback received varying reactions on Friday, but the vast majority of them involved statements similar to the following: “He’s 47 years old, he didn’t play at all last season, and he played the previous two seasons in the Czech Republic and Russia, respectively. Is he nuts?”...

Teemu Pulkkinen’s agent is talking tough (I think) regarding negotiations with the Red Wings

This is rare: According to Iltahleti’s Pekka Jalonen, the Red Wings and Teemu Pulkkinen’s agent, Krister Kaukinen, are working out the details of Pulkkinen’s three-year, entry-level contract with the Wings, but as Iltahleti’s a bit of a tabloid, Kaukinen’s being given a platform to “talk tough” about said contract. Here’s an incredibly, incredibly rough translation...

The Jiri Hudler issue, part 2: why he might choose to explore free agency and leave the Red Wings

The comment section went a little crazy after I posted an article in which the Free Press’s Helene St. James suggested that, despite the Wings’ need for a goal-scorer, they may not retain Jiri Hudler’s services, and MLive’s Ansar Khan provides a corollary to St. James’ argument: Put simply, given the incredibly thin crop of goal-scorers available in this summer’s free...

Red Wings overnight report: on Joey Mac, Nick’s numbers and…Pancakes?

Over the past few days, we’ve engaged in an incredibly spirited discussion regarding whether the Red Wings should pay a $3.5-4 million premium to match the kinds of offers Jiri Hudler might garner on the open market, which, as the Free Press’s Helene St. James and MLive’s Ansar Khan suggest, might be a bit too steep for the Wings given that the Wings would probably prefer to...

A Look at the Red Wings’ 2012 Free Agents: Kyle Quincey

This next series of articles will be discussing the good (and the bad) of the Detroit Red Wings’ upcoming Free Agents. Each player’s final analysis will be an opinion on that player’s contribution to the team overall. His play will either warrant a new contract or will hit the Free Agent market on July 1st. [...]

Red Wings evening news: dueling ‘will he or won’t he?’ Parise banjos and a charitable notice

On a day when the comments section has gone a little crazy regarding whether the Red Wings should attempt to retain Jiri Hudler’s services, or whether there really is a Zach Parise/Ryan Suter “package deal” in the offing, I’d rather not post this on a night that we don’t have hockey on TV because I hate even thinking about posting an entry that might provoke discussion...

Big House halfway to being ‘beerable’ for Red Wings-Maple Leafs Winter Classic

Via RedWingsFeed, it won’t necessarily warm fans up, but the most important fan lubricant to be sold at the Winter Classic is halfway to becoming kosher with the State of Michigan, as reported by the Detroit News... The Michigan House has voted to let hockey fans buy booze at Michigan Stadium when the home of Wolverines’ football hosts a game between the Detroit Red Wings and...

Fiddlesticks! John Tavares edges Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk in EA Sports’ NHL 13 Cover vote

The Red Wings and their fans worked hard to spread the word regarding the only NHL player that literally makes video game plays in real life, but the NHL and EA Sports report that Pavel Datsyuk didn’t win his semifinal against John Tavares in EA Sports’ NHL 13 cover athlete vote:( Giroux Faces Malkin, Tavares Meets Rinne in EA SPORTS NHL 13 Cover Vote Semifinals Sponsored By...

Red Wings overnight report: on a smaller rink, Parise and Suter and an incredibly long shift

Perhaps it got lost amidst the leak‘s worth of news regarding the Red Wings’ hiring of an architectural firm to help design their Joe Louis Arena follow-on rink and whatever will be built around it: my eyebrow, at least, rose half a foot when I read that the Wings are looking at an 18,000-seat arena, which would fit in nearly 2,000 fewer fans per night. The Windsor Star’s...

Leafs Looking For Veteran Goalie

from Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star, Leafs executive Dave Nonis was asked this week if the Leafs might even consider the services of Dominik Hasek, the one-time dominator who has announced his contemplation of an NHL comeback at age 47. “I think we’re looking for a veteran — I don’t know if we’re looking for that much of a veteran,” quipped Nonis, Toronto’s senior...
