Detroit Red Wings weekly: Zetterberg ousts the Maple Leafs

The Detroit Red Wings (3-1-1) are off to a fast start this season and aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. Two weeks in and the Red Wings have claimed 7 out of a possible 10 points. All 7 of the points came against Atlantic Division and Original Six rivals: Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs. Here’s my recap of the week that was for the Red Wings starting off with...

Detroit Red Wings weekly: Controversial defeat

Two games into the season and the Detroit Red Wings (1-1-0) can already start the counter of points they should of had but watched them slipped away. Anahiem Duck’s Captain Ryan Getzlaf buried the game winner top-shelf with 23.6 seconds remaining after what appeared to be a hook to the hands of Niklas Kronwall. Much to the dismay of Mike Babcock and Wings’ fans, no penalty was...

WATCH: Niklas Kronwall lays out Boston's Reilly Smith

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall is known for his crushing hits, even having his hits being given the moniker “kronwalled.” On Sunday, Boston Bruins forward Reilly Smith came up the ice with his head down and well, he got absolutely kronwalled. The Bruins have been controlling the play for most of the game and still hold a 2-0 lead. [@MyRegularFace] The post Red Wings’...

Niklas Kronwall Is Key To Detroit Red Wings’ Blue-Line Success (Video)

For two decades, future Hockey Hall of Famers Niklas Lidstrom was a stalwart on the blue line for the Detroit Red Wings. Lidstrom’s retirement in 2012 left a void, but new Wings No. 1 defenseman Niklas Kronwall has proven more than capable of filling it. The 33-year-old Kronwall has grown into a leadership role in Detroit, but he’ll be one of few experienced defensemen at coach...

Revisited: Why the Detroit Red Wings may not make the playoffs

At the start of the NHL season I listed 22 reasons why the Detroit Red Wings may not make the playoffs. With the Olympics putting everything on hold for a couple of weeks, now seems like a good time to review my list as the Red Wings currently occupy the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference. Looking back I’ll admit some of the reasons I wrote back then were a bit foolish, but there...

Niklas Kronwall scores off the netting above the glass (VIDEO)

YouTube Niklas Kronwall and the Red Wings were the beneficiaries of one of the worst botched goal calls since Brett Hull’s skate was in the crease in the 1999 Stanley Cup. With 26 seconds left in regulation and the Wings trailing the Kings 2-1, Kronwall’s slapshot that deflected off the stick of the Kings’ Jarret Stoll.  As you will see in the video, the puck bounced all the...

Detroit Red Wings: 3-year outlook, defense and goalies

A week ago I analyzed what the Detroit Red Wings’ forwards situation could be like three years down the road.  So, now I’m back to finish this series by breaking down the possible defense and goalie rotation the Wings could bolster for the 2016-17 season. Defense Quincey is the biggest question mark moving for. (Photo Credit: David Guralnick / The Detroit News) Half of the job...
